I am only new to MMS but have had the following conditions alleviated since starting the protocol a few weeks ago. I have been under par for the past three years after spending time in India and returning to Australia with a number of "antibiotic" resistant infections that have caused ongoing problems including severe depression and insomnia. I can see from my personal experience with taking MMS that these problems have almost disappeared after four weeks. It makes sense to me that MMS, because of its ability to kill pathogens within water etc., can as easily cure the physical body as it is said to be 90% water. Why so many cases of Gastritis around the world? Do we know? I think we have a good idea by looking at the facts and how the stomach works. Is it a bacterium, noxious processed foods, medications including vaccines or a combination of all? I believe it is a combination of all the above that are suppressing, aggravating and even stopping the stomach’s NATURAL processes which in turn affects the whole digestion process. By adversely affecting the NATURAL digestive system of the body ALL the systems of the body are affected and the “homeostasis” or balance we ALL need is lost.
Toxins are either compromising or destroying our body’s systems which in turn affects the following 12 systems of the body:

 

1. Digestive System - Organs include oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small and large intestine, and rectum.
Functions: break down food and deliver the products to the blood for dispersal to the body cells

The good news is: if we stop the toxins from entering the body in various ways then we can enjoy a body where everything works correctly i.e. homeostasis – balance – REAL health and protects us from dis-ease.

As always, I try to show from a few sources what is the consensus among so-called experts of what is Gastritis and how it is caused. What is Gastritis?
Gastritis is a condition primarily characterized by an inflammation of the stomach lining. This happens whenever the protective layer of the stomach is weakened or gets damaged. There is a barrier that protects the stomach from acids that digest the food that you eat. When this barrier is weakened, digestive juices will then cause damage to the stomach lining. It is considered as a troublesome condition that leads to different complications if not treated immediately. One of the resulting effects of gastritis is ulcers, and one condition that could aggravate gastritis is constipation, and therefore must be avoided. This includes avoiding all the things that also lead to constipation.
The inflammatory lesions can be classified in two namely, acute erosive gastritis or chronic atrophic gastritis. With the former often caused by regular use of certain drugs or medications, and the latter is often found to mostly occur in patients who are suffering from a severe case of iron deficiency anemia.

 

What Causes Gastritis?
• Alcoholism. Excessive alcohol intake could greatly irritate the stomach lining and eventually erode it. The stomach lining then becomes vulnerable to the juices that digest food. Hence, this excessive intake of alcohol could lead to gastritis.
• Use of aspirin, ibuprofen, and other pain relievers. These nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are also among the causes of gastritis. Using these drugs diminishes a particular substance in the body that helps in preserving the lining in the stomach that protects it from digestive juices. When this substance is reduced, the stomach lining also becomes weakened and vulnerable. You may take these pain relievers occasionally, but not all the time so as to avoid gastritis.
• Stress. It has been shown that stress due to various injuries, surgery, or even burns could lead to acute gastritis.
• Infections caused by bacteria. One bacterium that usually affects the stomach is Helicobacter pylori. In fact, people who are infected with such bacteria tend to suffer from chronic gastritis. 50% of the entire world population is said to be infected with the pylori bacterium, (emphasis mine) and infection is passed on from person to person. However, not all of those who get infected with the pylori bacterium suffer from complications. Medical experts say that the vulnerability of one person to the bacteria may be brought about by improper lifestyle like habitual smoking.
• Bile reflux. Bile is a fluid coming from the liver that helps the body in digesting fats. This is stored in the gallbladder. When bile is released, it then travels to the small intestine, passing through some thin tubes. The pyloric valve keeps the bile from getting in the stomach, however, whenever the valve is not able to work properly, bile will enter the stomach and could lead to chronic gastritis.
• Autoimmune disorder. This happens when your own immune system attacks the cells in the stomach lining, causing it to weaken. This is considered as a rare condition but is most likely to occur in people who also have other autoimmune disorders like Type 1 diabetes and Hashimoto’s disease.
• Other illnesses. There are certain studies that show that gastritis is also an effect of other diseases like parasitic infection, Crohn’s disease, as well as AIDS/HIV.

Diagnosis, Signs and Symptoms of Gastritis

Gastritis has various symptoms, which include the following:
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Pain and a feeling of discomfort.

Chronic gastritis may have the following symptoms:

• Fullness in the abdomen especially after meals
• Heartburn
• Loss of weight
• Occasional hemorrhage from the stomach
• Anemia


Remedies, Treatment and Cure for Gastritis

 

• Fasting. One of the most effective ways in treating gastritis is fasting.
• When fasting, the stomach is able to rest and the toxic condition gets to subside. Elimination is also hastened when undergoing a fast. It would usually require two to three days to recover but it is highly different with chronic gastritis.
• Fasting may need to be done for seven days or more. Short fasts could be repeated after an interval of 1 or 2 months.
• While on a fast, fruit juices may be taken.

Helicobacter Pylori

This unusual name identifies a specific bacterium that can cause infection of the stomach. This infection can contribute to the development of diseases, such as dyspepsia (heartburn, bloating and nausea), gastritis (inflammation of the stomach), and ulcers in the stomach and duodenum. It will be useful to know some things about the upper digestive tract to understand how and where Helicobacter pylori infection can occur.
When food is swallowed, it passes through the esophagus (the tube that connects the throat to the stomach). It then enters the larger upper part of the stomach. A strong acid that helps to break down the food is secreted in the stomach. The narrower, lower part of the stomach is called the antrum. The antrum contracts frequently and vigorously, grinding up the food and squirting it into the small intestine. The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine, just beyond the stomach. The stomach, including the antrum, is covered by a layer of mucous that protects it from the strong stomach acid.


It is known that alcohol, aspirin, and arthritis drugs such as ibuprofen can disrupt the protective mucous layer. This allows the strong stomach acid to injure underlying stomach cells. In some people, corticosteroids, smoking, and stress appear to contribute in some way. Until the mid 1980s, it was felt that one or more of these factors working together led to the development of gastritis and ulcers. Since that time, evidence has been mounting that Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has a major role in causing these diseases.

The Infection

H. pylori is a fragile bacterium that has found an ideal home in the protective mucous layer of the stomach. These bacteria have long threads protruding from them that attach to the underlying stomach cells. The mucous layer that protects the stomach cells from acid also protects H. pylori. These bacteria do not actually invade the stomach cells as certain other bacteria can. The infection, however, is very real and it does cause the body to react. Infection-fighting white blood cells move into the area, and the body even develops H. pylori antibodies in the blood.


H. pylori infection probably occurs when an individual swallows the bacteria in food, fluid, or perhaps from contaminated utensils. The infection is likely one of the most common worldwide. The rate of infection increases with age, so it occurs more often in older people. It also occurs frequently in young people in the developing countries of the world, since the infection tends to be more common where sanitation is poor or living quarters are cramped. In many cases it does not produce symptoms. In other words, the infection can occur without the person knowing it. The infection remains localized to the gastric area, and probably persists unless specific treatment is given.

How is H. pylori Infection Diagnosed?


There are currently four ways to diagnose H. pylori infection. During endoscopy (a visual exam of the stomach through a thin, lighted, flexible tube), the physician can remove small bits of tissue through the tube. The tissue is then tested for the bacteria. A breath test is also available. In this test, a substance called urea is given by mouth. A strong enzyme in the bacteria breaks down the urea into carbon dioxide, which is then exhaled and can be measured. And finally, there is a blood test that measures the protein antibodies against these bacteria that are present in the blood. This antibody can mean the infection is present, or that it was present in the past and is now cleared. In other words, a person can have a positive blood test but no infection. Finally, there is a stool test that measures a protein that is shed by the bacteria.

Gastritis and Dyspepsia

The symptoms are discomfort, bloating, nausea and perhaps vomiting. The person may also have symptoms that suggest ulcers — burning or pain in the upper abdomen, usually occurring about an hour or so after meals or even during the night. The symptoms are often relieved temporarily by antacids, milk, or medications that reduce stomach acidity. Yet, the physician does not find an ulcer when the patient is tested by x-ray or endoscopy. When H. pylori is found in the stomach, it is tempting to believe that it is the cause of the symptoms, although this connection is not yet clear cut. The physician will usually prescribe antibiotic therapy to see if clearing the infection relieves symptoms.

Ulcers
Stomach Ulcers: With stomach ulcers, H. pylori infection is found in 60 to 80 percent of the cases. Again, it is still uncertain how the infection acts to cause the ulcer. It probably weakens the protective mucous layer of the stomach. This allows acid to seep in and injure the underlying stomach cells. However, there is still a great deal of research to be done to unravel this relationship. For example, only aout 20% of patients infeced with H. pylori will develop ulcers.

Duodenal ulcers: In times past, physicians were taught “no acid, no ulcer.” The medical profession felt the single most important factor causing duodenal ulcers to form was strong stomach acid. Research has now shown that over 80% of all patients who develop duodenal ulcers have H. pylori infection in the stomach as well. Medical studies are under way to determine the relationship between the two and how an infection in the stomach can be related to a duodenal ulcer. Acid is still important; patients without acid in the stomach never get duodenal ulcers. However, physicians now accept the fact that the infection is directly related to the development of duodenal ulcers. It is now rather easy to clear duodenal ulcers with the strong acid-reducing medicines available. But, the ulcers will usually recur unless the H. pylori infection is also cleared from the stomach.

 

Stomach Cancer and Lymphoma

These two types of cancer are now known to be related to H. pylori bacteria. This does not mean that all people with H. pylori infection will develop cancer; in fact, very few do. However, it is likely that if the infection is present for a long time, perhaps from childhood, these cancers may then develop. This is another reason why it is important to treat H. pylori infection.

H. pylori is a very common infection of the stomach. It may be the most common infection in the world. It is now clear that the infection is directly related to the development of stomach and duodenal ulcers, and it is likely that it may be related to cancers involving the stomach. There are several diagnostic tests available, and effective treatment can prevent the recurrence of ulcers and perhaps the development of cancer.

H. pylori gastritis
The discovery of H. pylori's role in the development of gastritis and ulcers has led to improved treatment of chronic gastritis. Since the infection can be treated with antibiotics, the bacterium can be completely eliminated up to 90% of the time. The treatment, however, may be uncomfortable for patients and relies heavily on patient compliance. No single antibiotic has been found that would eliminate H. pylori on its own, so various combinations of antibiotics have been prescribed to treat the infection.


TRIPLE THERAPY. As of early 1998, triple therapy was the preferred treatment for patients with H. pylori gastritis. This treatment regimen usually involves a two-week course of three drugs. An antibiotic such as amoxicillin or tetracycline, and another antibiotic such as clarithromycin or metronidazole are used in combination with bismuth subsalicylate, a substance that helps protect the lining of the stomach from acid. However, this treatment often fails due to poor patient compliance and quadruple therapy is required.

DUAL THERAPY. Dual therapy involves the use of an antibiotic and a proton pump inhibitor. Proton pump inhibitors help reduce stomach acid by halting the mechanism that pumps acid into the stomach. Dual therapy has not been proven to be as effective as triple therapy, but may be ordered for some patients who can more comfortably handle the use of fewer drugs.

OTHER TREATMENTS. Scientists have experimented with quadruple therapy, which adds an antisecretory drug, or one that suppresses gastric secretion, to the standard triple therapy. One study showed this therapy to be effective with only a week's course of treatment in more than 90% of patients. The goal is to develop the most effective therapy combination that can work in one week of treatment or less.

Treatment of erosive gastritis

Patients with erosive gastritis may be given treatments similar to those for H. pylori, especially since some studies have demonstrated a link between H. pylori and NSAIDs in causing ulcers. The patient will most likely be advised to avoid NSAIDs.

Other forms of gastritis

Specific treatment will depend on the cause and type of gastritis. These may include prednisone or antibiotics. Critically ill patients at high risk for bleeding may be treated with preventive drugs to reduce the risk of acute stress gastritis. Sometimes surgery is recommended, but is weighed against the possibility of surgical complications or death. Once heavy bleeding occurs in acute stress gastritis, mortality is as high as 60%.

• Stomach issues gone!

I had digestive problems for approximately 5 years. I had diarrhea within one hour after eating. Sometimes it hit within 3 minutes of ingesting food. It didn't matter if it was toast with coffee, or a full turkey dinner. It caused some very embarrassing moments for me, to say the least. I started taking 6 MMS drops three or four times per day. Testimony Mario Guido, Migraine, gastritis and allergies.
After multiple years suffering from colds and allergies because I have a history of asthma since childhood, because all those cold morning, for years had to sleep with a lot of clothes and even two pairs of socks to not catch a cold, but I still wake up every morning sneezing , looked like a human machine gun sneezing, these allergies originated give me a lot of headaches or migraine, that I suffer from 13 or 15 years, where I was first given a pill for a headache from there as never leave, always carried with me from time to time had to go to a gastroenterologist because I had constant stomach problems, doctors told me I had gastritis and others because of so many pills for migraines, they told me I almost died with migraine as there's no cure allergies and even speak, and had to take care of the stomach as it could have a future of ulcers, apart joined my many visits to the ENT or pulmonologist, never knew where to go because every time I leave a bad flu I complicated breathing with bronchial spasms.
In December of 2011 before the holidays, my gastritis had been increased by several weeks, I could not take even a bowl of soup, only took jellies frost because the horrors stomach hurt if she ate something softer or slight, resigned to spending Festivities in bed, my father who lives in Chile told me the MMS, and sent me extra to Peru, I did not pay attention, not ever going to take, because I had many doubts, besides I had scheduled a doctor's appointment in a few days (here in Peru make you wait weeks or months for a medical appointment, weeks to take a test, testing weeks, weeks for the results and waiting until we can die, for we have social insurance) In short an afternoon where I could not take the head or stomach pain and gastritis pills did not effect me, and could not take pills for migraine because it would kill my stomach, haha, I remembered I had the MMS for a corner of the house, I followed my father and take the 1000 protocol.

Stomach Ulcers
A few months ago I had to go into hospital because I was very fatigued and could hardly walk anywhere without being out of breath. I knew something was wrong but not sure what the problem was.Also my pulse was getting rapid.I was experiencing palpitations and the pulse was around 98 after sleeping.I started to take your medicine a few weeks before but I did not feel that much better . I had diarrhea felt sick so I knew it was doing some good but i I did not feel the benefit Anyway I became very faint at work and they sent me to the A/E .They found out I was severely anaemic with a blood count of 5.4.I received 3 bags of blood over 2 days and I felt great.Later they gave me a gastroscopy .(This is when you have a small camera down your throat and it looks into your stomach.
Very unpleasant !)They told me I had a large Hiatus Hernia and ulcers that had healed up.I am convinced that the medicine had done this but I still needed to replenish my bood as I was probably bleeding inside without knowing it for some time.May I add I must have got the Hiatus hernia through a head on collision from a car that came over my side of the road.At the time I felt something tear but the doctors did not appear to be particularly interested.Even when I had this recent problem they would not commit themselves it could have been caused by this accident I had a few years ago.The last time I had a check up my bood count was 12 which is very good.I hope you will find this experience a help and I have actual proof that I had ulcers and they healed.

Acid Reflux Gone!
I was having a terrible time getting food down and at times very embarrassing if I was in a restaurant. The acid would build up in my stomach and not allow the food to pass into it. The doctor prescribed Prilosec (the purple pill), but the side effects were more then I wanted to deal with (Everything from headaches to trouble breathing).

I started taking Probiotics and after a few days they started working and worked great, but if I ran out or forgot to take them for a couple of days the Acid Reflux started to come back. I started to take MMS (looking for help with gout – but that is another story) and found my Acid Reflux was gone. I stopped taking probiotics after the protocol 1000 and a small maintenance dose of 6 drops a day. Now even when I stop the MMS the acid reflux does not come back.

Some side effects from taking protocol 1000 – after about the second or third day I woke up with no pain. I am 61 years old and very active play sports etc. have muscle and joint pain daily (you know when it takes a min after you stand up to get moving) Have had liver and kidneys checked, and am in great shape. The side effects for Prilosec can kill you MMS has all good ones.

Last week we talked about how important the Liver is and how to flush out the toxins and stones. I showed you what happened with my own Liver Flush. I really feel good and will be doing one a month until there are no more stones clogging the Liver, Gall bladder and bile ducts. This week we are showing people how to “restore health” from all forms of Hepatitis; A, B, C, D, E and F! It really doesn’t matter which one. The Genesis II Sacraments work for all of them. Okay Jordan! Thanx so, so, much! Actually; I'm doing very well with the 3 drops!!! But, I saw in the last podcast with Dad & Joe, (whom I Love!); that I could do it for 10-12 hours so I started easing up slowly. Bam! Better and better! NO BRAIN FOG! Memory is way better and almost No neuropathy pain as of now! BP almost normal, after 6 years of meds! Still have some spasms and target pain here and there, but nowhere as bad!.... Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. ... In particular, types B and C lead to chronic disease in hundreds of millions of people and, together, are the most common cause of liver cirrhosis and cancer. Hepatitis A and E are typically caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. 

Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. Many illnesses and conditions can cause inflammation of the liver, for example, drugs, alcohol, chemicals, and autoimmune diseases. Many viruses, for example, the virus causing mononucleosis and the cytomegalovirus can inflame the liver. Most viruses, however, do not attack primarily the liver; the liver is just one of several organs that the viruses affect. When most doctors speak of viral hepatitis, they are using the definition that means hepatitis caused by a few specific viruses that primarily attack the liver and are responsible for about half of all human hepatitis. There are several hepatitis viruses; they have been named types A, B, C, D, E, F (not confirmed), and G. As our knowledge of hepatitis viruses grows, it is likely that this alphabetical list will become longer. The most common hepatitis viruses are types A, B, and C. Reference to the hepatitis viruses often occurs in an abbreviated form (for example, HAV, HBV, HCV represent hepatitis viruses A, B, and C, respectively.) Hepatitis A vs B vs C
Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver due to a viral infection. Even though the liver is involved in all types of hepatitis, the virus type, route of transmission, natural history and treatment protocols are different between the types of hepatitis. This article will discuss the virus type, route of transmission, signs and symptoms, investigation and diagnosis, natural history, and treatment protocols of each type of hepatitis and compare them to differentiate one from the other.


Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is a food and water borne infection. Hepatitis A virus is a RNA virus. Usually travelers to tropical countries fall victim to this infection. Children get this infection easily. Virus enters the body via food or water and incubates for 3 to 6 weeks before causing prodromal symptoms like fever, ill health, lethargy, body ache, joint pains. During the active phase, yellowish discoloration of eyes develops with liver, spleen and lymph node enlargement.
Full blood count shows low white blood cell count and low platelets. Serum transaminases rise during the active phase. AST and ALT rise are more than ALP rise. ALT rises more than AST. Serum IgM rises after 25 days of exposure to indicate recent infection. After sero-conversion IgG remains detectable for life.
Treatment is supportive. Food hygiene, strict individual use of crockery to limit the spread, fluid intake, maintaining good renal function, and avoiding alcohol are important steps. There are various preventive methods. Passive immunization with immunoglobulin provides protection for 3 months and is recommended for travelers. Active immunization with a purified protein from the virus gives immunity for 1 year. If a booster dose is administered 6 months after the first dose, there will be immunity for 10 years. Hepatitis A is self-limiting but fulminant hepatitis is a rare possibility. Chronic hepatitis does not occur with hepatitis A.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a blood borne infection. Blood transfusion, unprotected sexual contact, hemodialysis, intravenous drug abuse are known risk factors. After the virus enters the body, it remains dormant for 1 to 6 months before giving rise to prodromal symptoms like fever and lethargy. Extra-hepatic features are more common in hepatitis B. During the acute stage liver and spleen enlargement occur.
Full blood count may show lymphocytic leukocytosis. AST levels rise 2 to 4 months after exposure and returns to baseline after the 5th month. HBsAg is positive in serum from 1-6 months. If HBsAg is positive after 6 months, it suggests chronic career state. HBeAg is positive in serum from 2 to 4 months and denotes a high infective state. In liver biopsy, immunofluorescence HBcAg and HBeAg are positive from 2 to 4 months. Antibodies against HBsAg appear 6 months after exposure, and anti-HBsAg is the only marker that is positive in vaccinated individuals. Anti-HBeAg becomes positive after 4 months. If anti-HBCAg is positive, it denotes a past infection. Complications include carrier state, relapse, chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, superinfection with hepatitis D, glomerulonephritis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. If HBsAg is positive, the risk increases 10 fold. If both HBsAg and HBeAg are positive, the risk increases 60 fold. Fulminant hepatitis is rare.
Treatment is supportive. Alcohol avoidance is essential.


Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is a RNA virus. It is also blood borne. Intravenous drug abuse, hemodialysis, blood transfusion, and sexual contact increase the risk of contracting the disease. Chronic hepatitis is very common after hepatitis C infection. Around 20% get cirrhosis. Hepatocellular carcinoma risk is also high with hepatitis C. Presentations are similar to hepatitis B.
AST and ALT both increase, but AST remains lower than ALT till cirrhosis develops. Hepatitis C Ag is positive during active infection. Treatment is supportive. In chronic hepatitis, interferon Alfa and ribavirin may be used. Peginterferone Alfa may be more effective than interferon Alfa. Evidence suggests that interferon Alfa reduces the progression into a chronic state when given during the acute stage.

 

Hepatitis D and E
Hepatitis D only exists with hepatitis B and increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatitis E is similar to hepatitis A and causes a high degree of mortality in pregnancy.
What is the difference between Hepatitis A, B and C?
• Hepatitis A and C are RNA viruses while hepatitis B is a DNA virus.
• Hepatitis B and C are blood borne while A is food borne.
• Hepatitis B and C cause chronic hepatitis while A does not.

So, that is what the main consensus is to what Hepatitis is and its’ causes. Again, I want to say it really doesn’t matter how it is caused but, one thing we know for sure is, the Liver is dis-eased evidenced by the inflammation. 2. Hep C
I am a Registered Nurse who contracted Hepatitis C from three units of blood given to me during surgery in 1986. I was diagnosed in 1996 and started getting physically sick in 2008-2009. My labs were getting worse. I was iron anemic, my platelet count was 150,000 which is the bottom of the scale, my MVC was at the bottom of the scale, IGg was off the scale, total protein was just over the scale, liver enzymes just over the scale, PCR went to 30,000,000. I was suffering from severe fatigue and at times could not get out of bed. I had to take freqent rest breaks when getting showered and dressed. I tried a preparation a Russian researcher had without success. I have refused Interferon or any conventional medicine. In January of 2013 I got serious with MMS. As of this date, January 5, 2014 all labs are within normal limits. The iron is not perfect, but I am not iron anemic. Liver enzymes, platelets, MCV, are perfect. PCR is 17,000,000. IGg still high. Feeling much, much better. No fatigue!!! If anyone wants to talk, write me.

3. A Bad Case of Hepatitis C

Thank you for the testimonials you keep passing our way. I wanted to tell you a couple of things. First of all, I got my little brother on the MMS. He had one month before he saw the doctor regarding his Hepatitis C, but he didn't take the MMS seriously and didn't really get serious about taking it until I got onto him pretty bad. So, just ONE week before seeing the doctor, he got quickly up to 15 drops twice a day. When he saw the doctor, his doctor told him he was "kicking butt". His bilirubin was completely normal!!! My brother called and was crying.
It was emotional for all of us. He called three of his sisters and mother and cried with all of us. He is really sticking with it now, because at the end of November he is supposed to meet with one other doctor...the one who was to put him on Chemotherapy to kill the hepatitis C virus. I'm in all hopes that he will not have to take it. I'm very confident he won't. It if were me, I wouldn't do it anyway, but most people have the modern medicine trance. God broke me away from it long ago. I'll let you know just as soon as he has his next appointment with the other doctor. Again THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for turning us on to MMS.
When I first got the MMS, I went right up to 15....I wanted to cut a urinary tract infection I had gotten when going away for the weekend, I didn't eat or drink right (little water), and some sweets. When I got back, I went right up to 15, and then the next morning, my urinary tract infection was gone. It was great. But I couldn't have done it if I hadn't been on a juicing program prior to this time. Even now, though, the taste is really getting to me. Whew! It was okay at first, but now it's getting almost unbearable. Not sure what's going on there, but I'm sticking with it for now.

4. Before-After "Blood Test Results" for Hepatitis
As some of you might already know from my former post on here, I found out that I had Hep.C a year ago, when my stomach filled up with fluids, [ascites] and my belly button ruptured from the large amount of fluids, which I was taken to the hospital, where they drained 7.2 liters of fluid out of my stomach, and put me on diuretics.
I had also become very weak and ended up in a wheel chair for some time.
After initial blood screening and CT scan, I was told that I had end-stage Hep.C and given 6 months or less to live. From that point I was referred to a Liver specialist who told me that I was too far in the 4th stage to be considered for the standard interferon treatments and the 6 months or less, was re-confirmed... that I should just go home to get my ducks in order. Nothing short of a liver-transplant would help.
Over the past year I've researched and have treated myself at home with herbs. to slow down the progression of the virus, and from a years worth of trial and error testing with herbal treatments, the most effective I've found to help control the virus is with a liver formula herbal blend called:Xiao Chai Hu San, which I made into the 00 sized capsules. This with other basic herbs like Milk Thistle etc. helped a lot, but though I've heard of those cases where Hep.C virus was healed with herbal methods, I've never been able to stop the virus with herbs, even with my best efforts to do so. This lead me to continue "Searching"...and lead me to run across the news about the MMS.

NOTE: I would also like to mentioned that after reading several of the post on here about MMS, I wanted to give the MMS a "True Testing" for myself, without any outside influences, so I stopped taking any herbs while taking the MMS, though I did continue taking supplements of Vitamin B-12,B-6 etc.but not within an hour of taking any MMS. My Goal was to let the MMS stand-alone upon it's own Merit. I'm not one that buys into or puts a lot of faith in blown-up advertisements or claims by others. Is MMS for real? And if so, just how good is it? And how effective is it without any help from outside sources like herbs or etc. taken along with it? I don't drink, and stick to a healthy diet. ~ So here's my results of finding the answers to these questions.

I ordered a bottle of MMS and after receiving it, I started taking it Mar.8th, 2010. But to not get ahead of myself here, here is my blood test results BEFORE and AFTER starting on MMS.

Apr.1st=5;3;4;3;3;4, Spacing does out every couple hrs. or so now..
Apr.2nd=5;3;4;4;3;3.Had BLOOD TEST 2 hrs.after 1st dose this morning.
Apr.3rd=3;3;3;3;3;3;5;5, Planning to continue with lower doses....
Apr.4th=3;3;3;3;4. Will continue taking moderate doses like this now for another few months, so as to pick up any hidden viruses in lymph nodes, tissue, or tooth fillings.
*sleeping much better than before, better appetite too. Now that my blood test is established...I'm going back on some herbs to help clear out the toxin and to stiffen up my immune system too. Will see how that goes with my next blood test in May.
The above Blood Test stands on it's own merits and needs no further proof as far as I'm concerned, simply because I've "NEVER" seen such a Normal reading with any of my blood-test over the past year, as I have with the MMS. And in such a short period of time too.

5. I cured my HEP C

Um, If you think that is nuts or too good to be true trust me your not the only one, I went to the testing facility To get TESTED FOR HEP C and the doctor said that "In 25 years of being in this profession, I have NEVER seen a Hep C case come back positive then go NEGATIVE By Itself" I CAME BACK POSITIVE FOR ANTIBODIES BUT NEGATIVE FOR THE VIRUS, SO Jim does know what he is talking about with the HIV/AIDS Testing PROBLEMS> I have helped a lot of people and they all are happier once they have been given this... GREAT JOB JIM!

6. Hepatitis B gone!!!

Hello Jim,
Attached please find my Hepatitis B lab test report. My friend and I have started drinking MMS for a week with 15 drops then go to Lab test. Two weeks later report come back with negative result. 75% South East Asian Chinese who come to U.S. has Hepa- titis B and doctors have no sure solution to cure it. But my Friend Tim & I drink MMS 15 drops for a week then our 20 years Hepatitis B are clean.

7. Hep C
A doctor in the U.S.A. told me I would be dead by spring of 2010. so I cancel my future appointments and went to Mexico found another doctor who told me he could help me, at first it look like he was helping my health problem as I had Hep C and my pcr count was 193000.00 well after 7 months I got worse, doctor said he wanted to change my medicine to some animal hormone, so I quit him. A friend gave me a bottle of MMS I started with 2 drops in the morning then 4 at noon then 7 in the evening, next morning I did 10 drops at noon, In the evening 13 drops, next morning did 15 drops, 15,at noon 15 in evening, after 30 days I had blood work done and check for Hep C, my pcr quant was now down to 83000.00. As of today, no Hep C has been found.

1. A religious spirit views God as a cold, harsh, distant taskmaster rather than an approachable, loving Father. When we base our relationship with God on our ability to perform spiritual duties, we deny the power of grace. God does not love us because we pray, read our Bibles, attend church or witness, yet millions of Christians think God is mad if they don’t perform these and other duties perfectly. As a result they struggle to find true intimacy with Jesus.
2. A religious spirit places emphasis on doing outward things to show others that God accepts him. We deceive ourselves into believing that we can win God’s approval through a religious dress code, certain spiritual disciplines, particular music styles or even doctrinal positions.
3. A religious spirit develops traditions and formulas to accomplish spiritual goals. We trust in our liturgies, denominational policies or man-made programs to obtain results that only God alone can give.
4. A religious spirit becomes joyless, cynical and hypercritical. This can turn a home or a church completely sour. Then, whenever genuine joy and love are expressed, this becomes a threat to those who have lost the simplicity of true faith.
5. A religious spirit becomes prideful and isolated, thinking that his righteousness is special and that he cannot associate with other believers who have different standards. Churches that allow these attitudes become elitist—and dangerously vulnerable to deception or cult-like practices.
6. A religious spirit develops a harsh, judgmental attitude toward sinners, yet those who ingest this poison typically struggle with sinful habits that they cannot admit to anyone else. Religious people rarely interact with nonbelievers because they don’t want their own superior morals to be tainted by them.
7. A religious spirit rejects progressive revelation and refuses to embrace change. This is why many churches become irrelevant to society. They become so focused on what God did 50 years ago that they become stuck in a time warp—and cannot move forward when the Holy Spirit begins to speak in new ways. When religious groups refuse to shift with God’s new directives, they become “old wineskins” and God must find more flexible vessels that are willing to implement His changes.
8. A religious spirit persecutes those who disagree with his self-righteous views and becomes angry whenever the message of grace threatens to undermine his religiosity. An angry religious person will use gossip and slander to assassinate other peoples’ character and may even use violence to prove his point. Jesus, in fact, warned His disciples: “There will even come a time when anyone who kills you will think he’s doing God a favor” (John 16:2, The Message).

A religious spirit develops a harsh, judgmental attitude toward sinners, yet those who ingest this poison typically struggle with sinful habits that they cannot admit to anyone else. Religious people rarely interact with nonbelievers because they don’t want their own superior morals to be tainted by them.  7. A religious spirit rejects progressive revelation and refuses to embrace change. This is why many churches become irrelevant to society. They become so focused on what God did 50 years ago that they become stuck in a time warp—and cannot move forward when the Holy Spirit begins to speak in new ways. How the Liver Works
Weighing in at just over one kilogram, the liver is a complex chemical factory that works 24 hours a day. It processes virtually everything you eat, drink, breathe in or rub on your skin and that's just some of the over 500 different functions vital to life.

To say the least, the liver is very important and needs to be working at its 100% efficiency. If the Liver is clogged or “dirty” it will not work correctly and eventually will cause a dis-eased Liver which in turn causes a multiplicity of problems in the body. The Liver has direct control over the growth and functioning of every cell in the body. Any kind of malfunction, deficiency, or abnormal growth pattern of the cell is largely due to poor liver performance. Even when it has lost up to 60 percent of its original efficiency, the liver‘s extraordinary design and resourcefulness may still allow it to perform ―properly, as indicated by normal blood values. As misleading as this may be to the patient and his doctor, the origin of most diseases can easily be traced to the liver. The first chapter of this book is dedicated to this vitally important connection. All diseases or symptoms of ill health are caused by an obstruction of some sort. For example, a blood capillary that is blocked can no longer deliver vital oxygen and nutrients to a group of cells it is in charge of supplying. To survive, these cells will need to enforce specific survival measures. Of course, many of the afflicted cells will not live through the ―famine and will simply die off. Yet other, more resilient cells will adjust to this adverse situation through the process of cell mutation and learn to utilize trapped metabolic waste products, such as lactic acid, to cover their energy needs. These cells may be compared to a man in the desert who, for lack of water, relies on drinking his own urine in order to live a little longer than he would otherwise. Among other reasons, cancerous tumors result from major congestion in the connective tissues, blood vessel walls, and lymphatic ducts, all of which prevent healthy cells from receiving enough oxygen and other vital nutrients. Other, more apparent obstructions can disrupt your well-being just as much. A constipated large intestine prevents the body from eliminating the waste products contained in feces. The holding back of fecal matter in the lower parts of the intestinal tract leads to a toxic environment in the colon and, if the situation is not resolved, in the entire body.

So, you can see I evacuated 500+ gallstones of various sizes! Those stones were either in my Gallbladder, Liver, Cystic duct, Common bile duct and maybe even in the Ambulla of the Pancreas or maybe all of the above!

How is 2017 treating you? We have had a very busy year so far. One of our Health Ministers who orders and uses our sacraments has been busy helping others!

Here is a testimony from a friend of hers.
"My problem started one morning a few months back getting out of bed when I noticed my feet were swollen, red and sore to touch. We want to talk about “FLS” or food like substances people routinely eat for breakfast and snacks, as well as most “foods” found in supermarkets today that are only nutrient-poor disease-creating industrial food products. Here are a few examples:

Are you sure that's food?

"Everything in moderation" is usually pretty sound advice, but let's face it: some things you should just not put in your mouth. From artificial flavors and colors to words you'd need an advanced degree in chemistry to pronounce, there are thousands of ingredients making their way into your food that are simply not, strictly speaking, food.

Bottom line: Even though you can buy these 19 foods at the grocery store doesn't mean you should.
Cheese that isn't cheese

Cheese faking is an art nearly as popular as cheesemaking. All kinds of brands make not-cheese, but the classic is Easy Cheese. This “pasteurized cheese snack” is full of fillers, oil, and emulsifiers. The ingredients are so un-cheeselike that lobbyers tried to force Kraft to call its cheese products “embalmed cheese”—but the government settled on “processed cheese,” according to the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Cheese of the World.
Ingredients: Whey, cheddar cheese (milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes), canola oil, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, milk, contains less than 2% of sodium citrate, sodium phosphate, salt, calcium phosphate, lactic acid, sodium alginate, autolyzed yeast extract, sorbic acid as a preservative, cheese culture, enzymes, apocarotenal (color), annatto (color).


Mayonnaise that's not mayonnaise

Less of an impostor than a consumer mistake: This white spread doesn’t technically meet the official definition of “mayonnaise,” which requires at least 65% vegetable oil. What do you get instead? "Dressing," where the major players are water, soybean oil, and vinegar. Tasty? Sure. Mayo? No.

Ingredients: Water, soybean oil, vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, modified cornstarch, sugar, eggs, salt, natural flavor, mustard flour, potassium sorbate as a preservative, paprika, spice, dried garlic.

Vanilla that's not vanilla

There’s actually no vanilla (nothing that even starts with the prefix van-) on the ingredient list of Nilla Wafers. The only tribute to their namesake? “Natural and artificial flavor,” from what? The label doesn't tell us.

Ingredients: Unbleached enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), folic acid), sugar, soybean oil, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, whey (from milk), eggs, natural and artificial flavor, salt, leavening (baking soda, and/or calcium, phosphate), emulsifiers (mono- and diglycerides, soy lecithin).


Chocolate that's not chocolate

A chocolate chip cookie, by any other name, is a total red flag. See chocolate-chip-flavored cookies. Why is it called "flavored"? To be called chocolate, the FDA requires that a food contain cocoa butter, and these use cheaper vegetable oils as substitutes. And yes—that partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil is code for trans- fat. Better bake your own.

Ingredients: Enriched flour bleached (wheat flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), sugar, chocolate flavored chips (sugar, partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil, cocoa, cocoa processed with alkali, dextrose, soy lecithin), partially hydrogenated soybean and/or cottonseed oil, water, contains 2% or less of: molasses, wheat protein isolate, baking powder (baking soda, sodium aluminum phosphate), salt, eggs, artificial flavor, nonfat milk.

Cream that's not cream

The world’s most popular cookie is, believe it or not, vegan—which is great for animals, but a bummer for anyone expecting cream in the middle. That white stuff—creme, they call it—is a blend of canola oil, artificial flavors, sugar, and other suspect players. And sadly, the very last ingredient is chocolate.

Ingredients: Sugar, unbleached enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate [vitamin B1], riboflavin [vitamin B2], folic acid), high oleic canola and/or palm and/or canola oil, cocoa (processed with alkali), high fructose corn syrup, leavening (baking soda and/or calcium phosphate), cornstarch, salt, soy lecithin, vanillin—an artificial flavor, chocolate.

Caramel that's not caramel

Caramel Syrup may look and taste like the gross approximation of caramel, but industrial caramel is way different than the kind you make at home using a sugar base. Some “caramel color” is processed with ammonia, and California even added the compound that makes it up—4-methylimidazole—to its list of known carcinogens. Companies don’t have to disclose whether they use ammonia in their caramel color, so it’s best to melt your own with this DIY recipe.

Ingredients: Corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, sweetened condensed skim milk (skim milk and sugar), water, contains 2% or less of: disodium phosphate, sodium citrate, salt, artificial flavor, caramel color, xanthan gum, artificial color (yellow 6, yellow 5).


Whipped cream that's not whipped cream

When you see this fluffy stuff you can't help but wonder (sometimes before you eat it, but more often after): “Wait, what is that stuff?”

Truly, imitation whipped cream is a modern marvel, though very debatably “food.” How else to explain the 14 ingredients responsible for a light-as-air texture? As the old childhood expression goes, “Pretty please, with imitation whipped topping and a cherry on top.”

Ingredients: Water, hydrogenated vegetable oil (coconut and palm kernel oils), high fructose corn syrup, skim milk, light cream, contains less than 2% of: sodium caseinate, natural and artificial flavor, xanthan and guar gums, polysorbate 60, sorbitan monostearate, beta carotene (color).


Peanut butter that's not peanut butter

Peanut-flavored sugar oil doesn’t have quite the same ring, but it’s far more accurate a name than your average peanut butter. What shouldn’t contain added sugar typically has at least two types, plus partially hydrogenated oil (code for trans fat). What should be on the ingredients list? Peanuts. Period.

Ingredients: Peanut butter [roasted peanuts, sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oils (cottonseed and rapeseed), molasses, salt, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil], sugar, and honey.

Ice cream that's not ice cream

Gone are the good ol’ days of ice cream. Now, we’re forced to shovel down spoonfuls of Frozen Dairy Dessert, which can’t legally be called ice cream without containing at least 10% milk fat, according to this depressing New York Times lament of ice cream lost. What Breyer’s Extra Creamy Vanilla Frozen Dairy Dessert (phew) does contain is plenty of corn syrup, gums, and whey.

Ingredients: Milk, sugar, corn syrup, cream, whey, mono and diglycerides, carob bean gum, guar gum, carrageenan, natural flavor, annatto (for color), vitamin A palmitate, Tara gum.

 

Eggs that aren't eggs

Eggs are one ingredient. But substituting them takes 20. Thankfully, eggs top the ingredient list, but it goes downhill from there: the very next ingredient is a proprietary blend of “natural flavor” to conjure up egginess.
Ingredients: Egg whites (99%), less than 1% of the following: natural flavor, color (includes beta carotene), spices, salt, onion powder, vegetable gums (xanthan gum, guar gum). Vitamins and minerals: calcium (sulfate), iron (ferric phosphate), vitamin E (alpha tocopherol acetate), zinc (sulfate), calcium pantothenate, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B1 (thiamine mononitrate), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D3, biotin.

Butter that's not butter

Serve this on your popcorn and you’ll have people believing it’s not butter in no time. "Butter" spray is as artificial as it gets.

Ingredients: Water, soybean oil, salt, sweet cream buttermilk, xanthan gum, soy lecithin, polysorbate 60, lactic acid, (potassium sorbate, calcium disodium EDTA) used to protect quality, natural and artificial
flavor, vitamin A palmitate, beta carotene (color).

Potatoes that aren't potatoes

Meet the mashed-potato-in-a-box, whose first ingredient is, thankfully, potatoes. (Dehydrated potato flakes, to be exact.) But they also come with preservatives, emulsifiers, flavorings, and even trans- fat. At that point, good luck trying to convince anyone of potato-realness.

Ingredients: Potato flakes (sodium bisulfite, BHA, and citric acid added to protect color and flavor), contains 2% or less of: Monoglycerides, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, natural flavor, sodium acid pyrophosphate, butteroil.

 

Chocolate milk that's not chocolate milk

Take a closer look: That’s chocolate drink in your hand, not chocolate milk. Yoo-hoo doesn’t actually contain any liquid milk, but it does come with a dose of partially hydrogenated soybean oil (hello, trans fat!). We dare you to get even halfway down the ingredient list before shedding a chocolate-flavored tear.

Ingredients: Water, high fructose corn syrup, whey (from milk), sugar, corn syrup solids, cocoa (alkali process), partially hydrogenated soybean oil, sodium caseinate (from milk), nonfat dry milk, salt, tricalcium phosphate, dipotassium phosphate, xanthan gum, guar gum, natural and artificial flavors, soy lecithin, mono and diglycerides, vitamin A palmitate, niacinamide (vitamin B3), vitamin D3, riboflavin (vitamin B2).


Orange juice that's not orange juice

Here’s what’s inside each bottle of Sunny D: high fructose corn syrup, and less than 2% of concentrated orange, tangerine, apple, lime, and grapefruit juice. Fruit concentrates are basically syrup, usually added to drinks and foods as additional sweeteners.

Ingredients: Water, high fructose corn syrup, and 2% or less of each of the following: concentrated juices (orange, tangerine, apple, lime, grapefruit). Citric acid, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), beta-carotene, thiamin hydrochloride (Vitamin B1), natural flavors, food starch-modified, canola oil, cellulose gum, xanthan gum, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium benzoate to protect flavor, Yellow #5, Yellow #6.


Maple syrup that's not maple syrup

Check out the syrup in your pantry before you pour it on your stack of pancakes: Chances are good you won’t find anything close to resembling maple syrup, but you’ll find plenty of corn syrup (two types!) and artificial flavorings. Here, treat your pancakes to another squeeze of sodium hexametaphosphate!

Ingredients: Corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, water, cellulose gum, caramel color, salt, sodium benzoate and sorbic acid (preservatives), artificial and natural flavors, sodium hexametaphosphate.

Blueberries that aren't blueberries

What goes best with fake maple syrup? Fraudulent pancakes, of course. Read the tiny print that says “with imitation blueberries”, and you’ll be dying to hear how to fake a fruit. Here’s the secret: take some dextrose, fractionated palm kernel oil, flour, citric acid, cellulose gum, maltodextrin, artificial flavors, two types of blue, one part red, and you’re set.

Ingredients: Enriched bleached flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid, may contain malted barley flour), imitation blueberry pieces (dextrose, fractionated palm kernel oil, enriched flour [wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid], citric acid, cellulose gum, maltodextrin, artificial flavor, red 40, blue 1, blue 2), sugar, soy flour, leavening (sodium bicarbonate, monocalcium phosphate, sodium aluminum sulfate), canola or soybean oil, dextrose, salt, mono-diglycerides, guar gum, artificial flavor.

 

Bacon that's not bacon

Ever wonder what’s in bacon bits? Not bacon. Bac’n Pieces™ (aka fakin’ bacon) has 12 ingredients, lots of unpronounceables, and no hint of the sizzly stuff.

Ingredients: Textured soy flour, canola oil, salt, caramel color, maltodextrin, natural and artificial flavor, lactic acid, yeast extract, disodium inosinate and disodium guanylate (flavor enhancers), and FD&C Red 40.

Lemonade that isn't lemonade

Even if life doesn’t give you lemons, you can still make lemonade. Their lemonade drink mix ingredient list mentions nary a lemon, but plenty else! Because nothing captures the color of summer quite like Yellow #5.


Ingredients: Sugar, fructose, citric acid, contains less than 2% of maltodextrin, natural flavor, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium citrate, magnesium oxide, calcium fumarate, soy lecithin, artificial color, yellow 5 lake, tocopherol (preserves freshness). Contains soy.

 

Tea that's not tea

Tea=tea+water. It's the easiest recipe on earth, yet companies so often seem to lose sight of what they're brewing. See SoBe, a PepsiCo company, that manages to cram 11 ingredients and no less than five weird extracts into their green tea. All in all, that's 21 grams of sugar and zero green tea—in our book, an extract does not a green tea make.

Ingredients: Filtered water, sugar, natural flavor, citric acid, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), green tea extract, caramel color, Reb A (purified stevia extract), guarana seed extract, panax ginseng root extract, rose hips extract.

9 Ways That Processed Foods Are Harming People

Processed foods are bad.
They are the main reason why people all over the world are getting fat and sick.
How do we know?
Every time a population adopts a “Western” diet high in processed foods, they get sick.
It happens within a few years. Their genes don’t change, their food does.
Real vs Processed Food
The word “processed” often causes some confusion, so let me clarify what I mean.
Obviously, most foods we eat are processed in some way. Apples are cut from trees, ground beef has been ground in a machine and butter is cream that has been separated from the milk and churned.
But there is a difference between mechanical processing and chemical processing.
If it’s a single ingredient food with no added chemicals, then it doesn’t matter if it’s been ground or put into a jar. It’s still real food.
However… foods that have been chemically processed and made solely from refined ingredients and artificial substances, are what is generally known as “processed food.”
Here are 9 ways that processed foods are bad for your health.

1. Processed Foods Are Usually High in Sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup

 

Processed foods are usually loaded with added sugar… or its evil twin, High Fructose Corn Syrup.
It is well known that sugar, when consumed in excess, is seriously harmful.
As we all know, sugar is “empty” calories – it has no essential nutrients, but a large amount of energy.
But empty calories are really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the harmful effects of sugar…
Many studies show that sugar can have devastating effects on metabolism that go way beyond its calorie content (1).
It can lead to insulin resistance, high triglycerides, increased levels of the harmful cholesterol and increased fat accumulation in the liver and abdominal cavity (2, 3).
Not surprisingly, sugar consumption is strongly associated with some of the world’s leading killers… including heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer (4, 5, 6, 7, 8).
Most people aren’t putting massive amounts of sugar in their coffee or on top of their cereal, they’re getting it from processed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages.
Bottom Line: Processed foods and beverages are the biggest sources of added sugar (and HFCS) in the diet. Sugar is very unhealthy and can have serious adverse effects on metabolism when consumed in excess.

2. Processed Foods Are “Hyper Rewarding” and Lead to Overconsumption

We all want to eat good food. That’s just human nature.
Evolution provided us with taste buds that are supposed to help us navigate the natural food environment.
Our appetite gravitates towards foods that are sweet, salty and fatty, because we know such foods contain energy and nutrients that we need for survival.

Obviously, if a food manufacturer wants to succeed and get people to buy their product, it has to taste good. But today, the competition is fierce. There are many different food manufacturers, all competing with each other.

For this reason, massive resources are spent on making foods as desirable as possible.
Many processed foods have been engineered to be so incredibly “rewarding” to the brain, that they overpower anything we might have come across in nature.
We have complicated mechanisms in our bodies and brains that are supposed to regulate energy balance (how much we eat and how much we burn) – which, until very recently in evolutionary history, worked to keep us at a healthy weight.

There is quite a lot of evidence that the reward value of foods can bypass the innate defense mechanism and make us start eating much more than we need, so much that it starts to compromise our health (9, 10).
This is also known as the “food reward hypothesis of obesity.”

The truth is, processed foods are so incredibly rewarding to our brains that they affect our thoughts and behavior, making us eat more and more until eventually we become sick.

Good food is good, but foods that are engineered to be hyper rewarding, effectively short circuiting our innate brakes against overconsumption, are NOT good.
Bottom Line: Food manufacturers spend massive amounts of resources on making their foods as “rewarding” as possible to the brain, which leads to overconsumption.

3. Processed Foods Contain All Sorts of Artificial Ingredients


If you look at the ingredients label for a processed, packaged food, chances are that you won’t have a clue what some of the ingredients are.
That’s because many of the ingredients in there aren’t actual food… they are artificial chemicals that are added for various purposes.
This is an example of a processed food, an Atkins Advantage bar, which is actually marketed as a low-carb friendly health food.

I don’t know what this is, but it most certainly isn’t food.
Highly processed foods often contain:
• Preservatives: Chemicals that prevent the food from rotting.
• Colorants: Chemicals that are used to give the food a specific color.
• Flavor: Chemicals that give the food a particular flavor.
• Texturants: Chemicals that give a particular texture.
Keep in mind that processed foods can contain dozens of additional chemicals that aren’t even listed on the label.

For example, “artificial flavor” is a proprietary blend. Manufacturers don’t have to disclose exactly what it means and it is usually a combination of chemicals.
For this reason, if you see “artificial flavor” on an ingredients list, it could mean that there are 10 or more additional chemicals that are blended in to give a specific flavor.

Of course, most of these chemicals have allegedly been tested for safety. But given that the regulatory authorities still think that sugar and vegetable oils are safe, I personally take their “stamp of approval” with a grain of salt.

Bottom Line: Most highly processed foods are loaded with artificial chemicals, including flavorants, texturants, colorants and preservatives.

4. Many People Can Literally Become Addicted to Processed Junk Foods

The “hyper rewarding” nature of processed foods can have serious consequences for some people.
Some people can literally become addicted to this stuff and completely lose control over their consumption.

Although food addiction is something that most people don’t know about, I am personally convinced that it is a huge problem in society today.

It is the main reason why some people just can’t stop eating these foods, no matter how hard they try.
They’ve had their brain biochemistry hijacked by the intense dopamine release that occurs in the brain when they eat these foods (11).

This is actually supported by many studies. Sugar and highly rewarding junk foods activate the same areas in the brain as drugs of abuse like cocaine (12).


Bottom Line: For many people, junk foods can hijack the biochemistry of the brain, leading to downright addiction and cause them to lose control over their consumption.

5. Processed Foods Are Often High in Refined Carbohydrates

 

There is a lot of controversy regarding carbohydrates in the diet.
Some people think that the majority of our energy intake should be from carbs, while others think they should be avoided like the plague.
But one thing that almost everyone agrees on, is that carbohydrates from whole foods are much better than refined carbohydrates.
Processed foods are often high in carbs, but it is usually the refined variety.

One of the main problems is that refined, “simple” carbohydrates are quickly broken down in the digestive tract, leading to rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels.

This can lead to carb cravings a few hours later when blood sugar levels go down again. This phenomenon is also called the “blood sugar roller coaster” – which many people who have been on a high-carb diet can relate to.

Not surprisingly, eating a lot of refined carbohydrates is associated with negative health effects and many chronic diseases (13, 14, 15).
Do NOT be fooled by labels like “whole grains” that are often plastered on processed food packages, including

breakfast cereals.
These are usually whole grains that have been pulverized into very fine flour and are just as harmful as their refined counterparts.
If you’re going to eat carbs, get them from whole, single ingredient foods, not processed junk foods.

Bottom Line: The carbohydrates you find in processed foods are usually refined, “simple” carbohydrates. These can lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels and cause negative health effects.

6. Most Processed Foods Are Low in Nutrients

 

Processed foods are extremely low in essential nutrients compared to whole, unprocessed foods.

In some cases, synthetic vitamins and minerals are added to the foods to compensate for what was lost during processing.

However, synthetic nutrients are NOT a good
replacement for the nutrients found in whole foods.

Also, let’s not forget that real foods contain much more than just the standard vitamins and minerals that we’re all familiar with.

Real foods… like plants and animals, contain thousands of other trace nutrients that science is just beginning to grasp.
Maybe one day we will invent a chemical blend that can replace all these nutrients, but until that happens… the only way to get them in your diet is to eat whole, unprocessed foods.

The more you eat of processed foods, the less you will get of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and various trace nutrients.

Bottom Line: There are many nutrients found in whole foods that are not found in processed foods. The more processed foods you eat, the less you will get of these nutrients.


7. Processed Foods Tend to be Low in Fiber

 

Fiber, especially soluble, fermentable fiber, has various benefits.

One of the main ones is that it functions as a prebiotic, feeding the friendly bacteria in the intestine (16, 17).
There is also evidence that fiber can slow down the absorption of carbohydrates and help us feel more satisfied with fewer calories (18, 19).

Soluble fiber can also help treat many cases of constipation, which is a very common problem today (20).

The fiber that is found naturally in foods is often lost during processing, or intentionally removed. Therefore, most processed foods are very low in fiber.

Bottom Line: Soluble, fermentable fiber has various important health benefits, but most processed foods are very low in fiber because it is lost or intentionally removed during processing.

8. It Requires Less Energy and Time to Digest Processed Foods

 

Food manufacturers want their processed food products to have a long shelf life.
They also want each batch of the product to have a similar consistency and they want their foods to be easily consumed.

Given the way foods are processed, they are often very easy to chew and swallow. Sometimes, it’s almost as if they melt in your mouth.
Most of the fiber has been taken out and the ingredients are refined, isolated nutrients that don’t resemble the whole foods they came from.

One consequence of this is that it takes less energy to eat and digest processed foods.
We can eat more of them in a shorter amount of time (more calories in) and we also burn less energy (fewer calories out) digesting them than we would if they were unprocessed, whole foods.

One study in 17 healthy men and women compared the difference in energy expenditure after consuming a processed vs a whole foods-based meal (21).
They ate a sandwich, either with multi-grain bread and cheddar cheese (whole foods) or with white bread and processed cheese (processed foods).

It turned out that they burned twice as many calories digesting the unprocessed meal.

The Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) is a measure of how much different foods stimulate energy expenditure after eating. It totals about 10% of total energy expenditure (metabolic rate) in the average person.
According to this study, people who eat processed food will cut their TEF in half, effectively reducing the amount of calories they burn throughout the day.

Bottom Line: We only burn half as many calories digesting and metabolizing processed foods compared to whole foods.

9. Processed Foods Are Often High in Trans Fats or Processed Vegetable Oils

Processed foods are often high in unhealthy fats.
They usually contain cheap fats, refined seed- and vegetable oils (like soybean oil) that are often hydrogenated… which turns them into trans fats.
Vegetable oils are extremely unhealthy and most people are eating way too much of them already.
These fats contain excessive amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids, which can drive oxidation and inflammation in the body.

Several studies show that when people eat more of these oils, they have a significantly increased risk of heart disease, which is the most common cause of death in Western countries today.
If the fats are hydrogenated, that makes them even worse. Hydrogenated (trans) fats are among the nastiest, unhealthiest substances you can put into your body.

The best way to avoid seed oils and trans fats is to avoid processed foods. Eat real fats like butter, coconut oil and olive oil instead.

Just Eat Real Food!

When we replace real, traditional foods like butter, meat and vegetables with crappy, processed junk foods, we get fat and sick.
Real food is the key to good health, processed food is not. Period.

Food Allergies caused by TBHQ?

Cheryl Rockwell, an assistant professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University, uncovered during 9 years of research that the common food additive TBHQ (tert-butylhydroquinone) causes abnormal reactions in the immune system that trigger food allergies. She explains that TBHQ negatively affects “T-cells” in the body (which are generally used to fight infections) in a way that promotes allergies to tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat and shellfish.


“Because humans are exposed to TBHQ through ingestion of food, the development of food allergies may be of particular concern. Notably, there has been an increase in reports of food allergy that seems to correlate with the increased use of TBHQ and other phenolic antioxidants as food preservatives.” ~ Cheryl Rockwell, PhD, The Journal of Immunology


Dr. Rockwell just received a large grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to continue her research on TBHQ and its relation to human food allergies. While I highly doubt one single food additive is the cause of all food allergies, this is a move in the right direction. Ingredients are dumped into our food with zero independent or regulatory oversight – some of which trigger very serious allergic reactions and can have other negative effects on our health.

What is TBHQ?

One of my first big restaurant investigations was Chick-Fil-A, in which I found that they used the preservative TBHQ not once – but twice – in their chicken sandwiches as it was in both the chicken and the bun. This sandwich was one of my favorite foods to eat when I was younger, so this really hit home!
You can’t get much more toxic than TBHQ. This synthetic preservative is a form of butane and has been linked to vision disturbances, liver enlargement, childhood behavioral problems, and stomach cancer in animal studies. It’s also banned for use in food in other countries including Japan, and is on the Center For Science in The Public Interest’s list as one of the worst food additives to be avoided.

Even though TBHQ is technically an “antioxidant” which makes it sound healthy – it’s synthetically created in a lab. Other synthetic antioxidants include BHT and BHA, which the Environmental Working Group says should not be in our food.

Journalist Michael Pollan first alerted the masses to this ingredient 10 years ago in his bestselling book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma:

“But perhaps the most alarming ingredient in a Chicken McNugget is tertiary butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ, , an antioxidant derived from petroleum that is either sprayed directly on the nugget or the inside of the box it comes in to “help preserve freshness.” According to A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives, TBHQ is a form of butane (i.e. lighter fluid) the FDA allows processors to use sparingly in our food: It can comprise no more than 0.02 percent of the oil in a nugget. Which is probably just as well, considering that ingesting a single gram of TBHQ can cause “nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse.” Ingesting five grams of TBHQ can kill.” ~ Michael Pollan, The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, 2006


McDonald’s has since removed the TBHQ. Despite the dangers, the FDA has allowed TBHQ in our food since 1972 and since then it has become so common that you can barely walk down a single aisle in the supermarket without running into products with it left and right.

When the World Health Organization evaluated the intake of TBHQ in the U.S., they found that people who regularly eat high fat foods are consuming 180% of the “acceptable daily intake”. In other words… WAY too much!

Soon after I consulted Chick-Fil-A in 2012 and raised concerns about the TBHQ, they began testing peanut oil without it in multiple markets – and finally ditched it completely in 2015. They also didn’t replace it with some other toxic chemical, they just took it out. You’ve got to ask yourself, is this ingredient really necessary?

Beware: Avoiding TBHQ isn’t easy because it’s not always listed on the label.

 

Food companies are allowed to determine whether or not they will put TBHQ on the label, based on a little loophole in our food labeling regulations. If they decide that TBHQ meets the labeling definition of an “incidental additive” then they can just leave it off the ingredient list. Additives are considered incidental if they don’t serve a function in the finished product and are used in insignificant levels (the FDA doesn’t define what “insignificant” means, so that’s anyone’s guess).
In other words, if TBHQ is used to preserve oil that is an ingredient in cookies, but the amount is considered insignificant and is not preserving the final product (the cookies), it doesn’t need to be listed on the cookie label. Since TBHQ is often used to preserve fats and oils it can be exempt from mandatory labeling as an incidental ingredient in products like crackers, tortillas, and chips.

The same goes for when TBHQ is used to preserve
flavor ingredients – the food company decides if it is preserving the finished product (requiring a label) or not. 

 

As a precaution, many companies do list TBHQ on the label though, so keep your eyes peeled! My team recently scoured the grocery store shelves and found it in dozens of really popular products – many of them targeting children.

Please, Like, Share and Subscribe to these links and then share with EVERYONE you know!   We want to talk about “FLS” or food like substances people routinely eat for breakfast and snacks, as well as most “foods” found in supermarkets today that are only nutrient-poor disease-creating industrial food products.  Here are a few examples: Are you sure that's food? "Everything in moderation" is usually pretty sound advice, but let's face it: some things you should just not put in your mouth. From artificial flavors and colors to words you'd need an advanced degree in chemistry to pronounce, there are thousands of ingredients making their way into your food that are simply not, strictly speaking, food.  Bottom line: Even though you can buy these 19 foods at the grocery store doesn't mean you should.  Cheese that isn't cheese   Cheese faking is an art nearly as popular as cheesemaking. All kinds of brands make not-cheese, but the classic is Easy Cheese. This “pasteurized cheese snack” is full of fillers, oil, and emulsifiers. The ingredients are so un-cheeselike that lobbyers tried to force Kraft to call its cheese products “embalmed cheese”—but the government settled on “processed cheese,” according to the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Cheese of the World. Ingredients: Whey, cheddar cheese (milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes), canola oil, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, milk, contains less than 2% of sodium citrate, sodium phosphate, salt, calcium phosphate, lactic acid, sodium alginate, autolyzed yeast extract, sorbic acid as a preservative, cheese culture, enzymes, apocarotenal (color), annatto (color). Mayonnaise that's not mayonnaise      Less of an impostor than a consumer mistake: This white spread doesn’t technically meet the official definition of “mayonnaise,” which requires at least 65% vegetable oil. What do you get instead? "Dressing," where the major players are water, soybean oil, and vinegar. Tasty? Sure. Mayo? No. Ingredients: Water, soybean oil, vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, modified cornstarch, sugar, eggs, salt, natural flavor, mustard flour, potassium sorbate as a preservative, paprika, spice, dried garlic.  Vanilla that's not vanilla      There’s actually no vanilla (nothing that even starts with the prefix van-) on the ingredient list of Nilla Wafers. The only tribute to their namesake? “Natural and artificial flavor,” from what? The label doesn't tell us. Ingredients: Unbleached enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), folic acid), sugar, soybean oil, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, whey (from milk), eggs, natural and artificial flavor, salt, leavening (baking soda, and/or calcium, phosphate), emulsifiers (mono- and diglycerides, soy lecithin). Chocolate that's not chocolate      A chocolate chip cookie, by any other name, is a total red flag. See chocolate-chip-flavored cookies. Why is it called "flavored"? To be called chocolate, the FDA requires that a food contain cocoa butter, and these use cheaper vegetable oils as substitutes. And yes—that partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil is code for trans- fat. Better bake your own.  Ingredients: Enriched flour bleached (wheat flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), sugar, chocolate flavored chips (sugar, partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil, cocoa, cocoa processed with alkali, dextrose, soy lecithin), partially hydrogenated soybean and/or cottonseed oil, water, contains 2% or less of: molasses, wheat protein isolate, baking powder (baking soda, sodium aluminum phosphate), salt, eggs, artificial flavor, nonfat milk. Cream that's not cream     The world’s most popular cookie is, believe it or not, vegan—which is great for animals, but a bummer for anyone expecting cream in the middle. That white stuff—creme, they call it—is a blend of canola oil, artificial flavors, sugar, and other suspect players. And sadly, the very last ingredient is chocolate. Ingredients: Sugar, unbleached enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate [vitamin B1], riboflavin [vitamin B2], folic acid), high oleic canola and/or palm and/or canola oil, cocoa (processed with alkali), high fructose corn syrup, leavening (baking soda and/or calcium phosphate), cornstarch, salt, soy lecithin, vanillin—an artificial flavor, chocolate. Caramel that's not caramel     Caramel Syrup may look and taste like the gross approximation of caramel, but industrial caramel is way different than the kind you make at home using a sugar base. Some “caramel color” is processed with ammonia, and California even added the compound that makes it up—4-methylimidazole—to its list of known carcinogens. Companies don’t have to disclose whether they use ammonia in their caramel color, so it’s best to melt your own with this DIY recipe. Ingredients: Corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, sweetened condensed skim milk (skim milk and sugar), water, contains 2% or less of: disodium phosphate, sodium citrate, salt, artificial flavor, caramel color, xanthan gum, artificial color (yellow 6, yellow 5). Whipped cream that's not whipped cream     When you see this fluffy stuff you can't help but wonder (sometimes before you eat it, but more often after): “Wait, what is that stuff?” Truly, imitation whipped cream is a modern marvel, though very debatably “food.” How else to explain the 14 ingredients responsible for a light-as-air texture? As the old childhood expression goes, “Pretty please, with imitation whipped topping and a cherry on top.” Ingredients: Water, hydrogenated vegetable oil (coconut and palm kernel oils), high fructose corn syrup, skim milk, light cream, contains less than 2% of: sodium caseinate, natural and artificial flavor, xanthan and guar gums, polysorbate 60, sorbitan monostearate, beta carotene (color). Peanut butter that's not peanut butter     Peanut-flavored sugar oil doesn’t have quite the same ring, but it’s far more accurate a name than your average peanut butter. What shouldn’t contain added sugar typically has at least two types, plus partially hydrogenated oil (code for trans fat). What should be on the ingredients list? Peanuts. Period.  Ingredients: Peanut butter [roasted peanuts, sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oils (cottonseed and rapeseed), molasses, salt, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil], sugar, and honey. Ice cream that's not ice cream     Gone are the good ol’ days of ice cream. Now, we’re forced to shovel down spoonfuls of Frozen Dairy Dessert, which can’t legally be called ice cream without containing at least 10% milk fat, according to this depressing New York Times lament of ice cream lost. What Breyer’s Extra Creamy Vanilla Frozen Dairy Dessert (phew) does contain is plenty of corn syrup, gums, and whey. Ingredients: Milk, sugar, corn syrup, cream, whey, mono and diglycerides, carob bean gum, guar gum, carrageenan, natural flavor, annatto (for color), vitamin A palmitate, Tara gum.               Eggs that aren't eggs      Eggs are one ingredient. But substituting them takes 20. Thankfully, eggs top the ingredient list, but it goes downhill from there: the very next ingredient is a proprietary blend of “natural flavor” to conjure up egginess.  Ingredients: Egg whites (99%), less than 1% of the following: natural flavor, color (includes beta carotene), spices, salt, onion powder, vegetable gums (xanthan gum, guar gum). Vitamins and minerals: calcium (sulfate), iron (ferric phosphate), vitamin E (alpha tocopherol acetate), zinc (sulfate), calcium pantothenate, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B1 (thiamine mononitrate), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D3, biotin. Butter that's not butter     Serve this on your popcorn and you’ll have people believing it’s not butter in no time. "Butter" spray is as artificial as it gets. Ingredients: Water, soybean oil, salt, sweet cream buttermilk, xanthan gum, soy lecithin, polysorbate 60, lactic acid, (potassium sorbate, calcium disodium EDTA) used to protect quality, natural and artificial flavor, vitamin A palmitate, beta carotene (color). Potatoes that aren't potatoes       Potatoes that aren't potatoes Meet the mashed-potato-in-a-box, whose first ingredient is, thankfully, potatoes. (Dehydrated potato flakes, to be exact.) But they also come with preservatives, emulsifiers, flavorings, and even trans- fat. At that point, good luck trying to convince anyone of potato-realness. Ingredients: Potato flakes (sodium bisulfite, BHA, and citric acid added to protect color and flavor), contains 2% or less of: Monoglycerides, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, natural flavor, sodium acid pyrophosphate, butteroil. Chocolate milk that's not chocolate milk     Take a closer look: That’s chocolate drink in your hand, not chocolate milk. Yoo-hoo doesn’t actually contain any liquid milk, but it does come with a dose of partially hydrogenated soybean oil (hello, trans fat!). We dare you to get even halfway down the ingredient list before shedding a chocolate-flavored tear. Ingredients: Water, high fructose corn syrup, whey (from milk), sugar, corn syrup solids, cocoa (alkali process), partially hydrogenated soybean oil, sodium caseinate (from milk), nonfat dry milk, salt, tricalcium phosphate, dipotassium phosphate, xanthan gum, guar gum, natural and artificial flavors, soy lecithin, mono and diglycerides, vitamin A palmitate, niacinamide (vitamin B3), vitamin D3, riboflavin (vitamin B2). Orange juice that's not orange juice        Here’s what’s inside each bottle of Sunny D: high fructose corn syrup, and less than 2% of concentrated orange, tangerine, apple, lime, and grapefruit juice. Fruit concentrates are basically syrup, usually added to drinks and foods as additional sweeteners. Ingredients: Water, high fructose corn syrup, and 2% or less of each of the following: concentrated juices (orange, tangerine, apple, lime, grapefruit). Citric acid, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), beta-carotene, thiamin hydrochloride (Vitamin B1), natural flavors, food starch-modified, canola oil, cellulose gum, xanthan gum, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium benzoate to protect flavor, Yellow #5, Yellow #6. Maple syrup that's not maple syrup     Check out the syrup in your pantry before you pour it on your stack of pancakes: Chances are good you won’t find anything close to resembling maple syrup, but you’ll find plenty of corn syrup (two types!) and artificial flavorings. Here, treat your pancakes to another squeeze of sodium hexametaphosphate! Bacon that's not bacon     Ever wonder what’s in bacon bits? Not bacon. Bac’n Pieces™ (aka fakin’ bacon) has 12 ingredients, lots of unpronounceables, and no hint of the sizzly stuff. Ingredients: Textured soy flour, canola oil, salt, caramel color, maltodextrin, natural and artificial flavor, lactic acid, yeast extract, disodium inosinate and disodium guanylate (flavor enhancers), and FD&C Red 40. Lemonade that isn't lemonade     Even if life doesn’t give you lemons, you can still make lemonade. Their lemonade drink mix ingredient list mentions nary a lemon, but plenty else! Because nothing captures the color of summer quite like Yellow #5. Ingredients: Sugar, fructose, citric acid, contains less than 2% of maltodextrin, natural flavor, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium citrate, magnesium oxide, calcium fumarate, soy lecithin, artificial color, yellow 5 lake, tocopherol (preserves freshness). Contains soy. Tea that's not tea     Tea=tea+water. It's the easiest recipe on earth, yet companies so often seem to lose sight of what they're brewing. See SoBe, a PepsiCo company, that manages to cram 11 ingredients and no less than five weird extracts into their green tea. All in all, that's 21 grams of sugar and zero green tea—in our book, an extract does not a green tea make. They are the main reason why people all over the world are getting fat and sick. How do we know? Every time a population adopts a “Western” diet high in processed foods, they get sick. It happens within a few years. Their genes don’t change, their food does. Real vs Processed Food The word “processed” often causes some confusion, so let me clarify what I mean. Obviously, most foods we eat are processed in some way. Apples are cut from trees, ground beef has been ground in a machine and butter is cream that has been separated from the milk and churned. But there is a difference between mechanical processing and chemical processing.  If it’s a single ingredient food with no added chemicals, then it doesn’t matter if it’s been ground or put into a jar. It’s still real food. However… foods that have been chemically processed and made solely from refined ingredients and artificial substances, are what is generally known as “processed food.” Here are 9 ways that processed foods are bad for your health. 1. Processed Foods Are Usually High in Sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup   Processed foods are usually loaded with added sugar… or its evil twin, High Fructose Corn Syrup. It is well known that sugar, when consumed in excess, is seriously harmful. As we all know, sugar is “empty” calories – it has no essential nutrients, but a large amount of energy. But empty calories are really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the harmful effects of sugar… Many studies show that sugar can have devastating effects on metabolism that go way beyond its calorie content (1). It can lead to insulin resistance, high triglycerides, increased levels of the harmful cholesterol and increased fat accumulation in the liver and abdominal cavity (2, 3). Not surprisingly, sugar consumption is strongly associated with some of the world’s leading killers… including heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer (4, 5, 6, 7, 8). Most people aren’t putting massive amounts of sugar in their coffee or on top of their cereal, they’re getting it from processed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages. Bottom Line: Processed foods and beverages are the biggest sources of added sugar (and HFCS) in the diet. Sugar is very unhealthy and can have serious adverse effects on metabolism when consumed in excess. 2. Processed Foods Are “Hyper Rewarding” and Lead to Overconsumption We all want to eat good food. That’s just human nature. Evolution provided us with taste buds that are supposed to help us navigate the natural food environment. Our appetite gravitates towards foods that are sweet, salty and fatty, because we know such foods contain energy and nutrients that we need for survival.   Obviously, if a food manufacturer wants to succeed and get people to buy their product, it has to taste good. But today, the competition is fierce. There are many different food manufacturers, all competing with each other. For this reason, massive resources are spent on making foods as desirable as possible. Many processed foods have been engineered to be so incredibly “rewarding” to the brain, that they overpower anything we might have come across in nature.  We have complicated mechanisms in our bodies and brains that are supposed to regulate energy balance (how much we eat and how much we burn) – which, until very recently in evolutionary history, worked to keep us at a healthy weight. There is quite a lot of evidence that the reward value of foods can bypass the innate defense mechanism and make us start eating much more than we need, so much that it starts to compromise our health (9, 10). This is also known as the “food reward hypothesis of obesity.” The truth is, processed foods are so incredibly rewarding to our brains that they affect our thoughts and behavior, making us eat more and more until eventually we become sick. Good food is good, but foods that are engineered to be hyper rewarding, effectively short circuiting our innate brakes against overconsumption, are NOT good. Bottom Line: Food manufacturers spend massive amounts of resources on making their foods as “rewarding” as possible to the brain, which leads to overconsumption. 3. Processed Foods Contain All Sorts of Artificial Ingredients If you look at the ingredients label for a processed, packaged food, chances are that you won’t have a clue what some of the ingredients are. That’s because many of the ingredients in there aren’t actual food… they are artificial chemicals that are added for various purposes. This is an example of a processed food, an Atkins Advantage bar, which is actually marketed as a low-carb friendly health food.   I don’t know what this is, but it most certainly isn’t food. Highly processed foods often contain: • Preservatives: Chemicals that prevent the food from rotting.  • Colorants: Chemicals that are used to give the food a specific color.  • Flavor: Chemicals that give the food a particular flavor.  • Texturants: Chemicals that give a particular texture.  Keep in mind that processed foods can contain dozens of additional chemicals that aren’t even listed on the label. For example, “artificial flavor” is a proprietary blend. Manufacturers don’t have to disclose exactly what it means and it is usually a combination of chemicals. For this reason, if you see “artificial flavor” on an ingredients list, it could mean that there are 10 or more additional chemicals that are blended in to give a specific flavor. Of course, most of these chemicals have allegedly been tested for safety. But given that the regulatory authorities still think that sugar and vegetable oils are safe, I personally take their “stamp of approval” with a grain of salt. Bottom Line: Most highly processed foods are loaded with artificial chemicals, including flavorants, texturants, colorants and preservatives. 4. Many People Can Literally Become Addicted to Processed Junk Foods   The “hyper rewarding” nature of processed foods can have serious consequences for some people. Some people can literally become addicted to this stuff and completely lose control over their consumption. Although food addiction is something that most people don’t know about, I am personally convinced that it is a huge problem in society today. It is the main reason why some people just can’t stop eating these foods, no matter how hard they try. They’ve had their brain biochemistry hijacked by the intense dopamine release that occurs in the brain when they eat these foods (11). This is actually supported by many studies. Sugar and highly rewarding junk foods activate the same areas in the brain as drugs of abuse like cocaine (12). Bottom Line: For many people, junk foods can hijack the biochemistry of the brain, leading to downright addiction and cause them to lose control over their consumption. 5. Processed Foods Are Often High in Refined Carbohydrates   There is a lot of controversy regarding carbohydrates in the diet. Some people think that the majority of our energy intake should be from carbs, while others think they should be avoided like the plague. But one thing that almost everyone agrees on, is that carbohydrates from whole foods are much better than refined carbohydrates. Processed foods are often high in carbs, but it is usually the refined variety. One of the main problems is that refined, “simple” carbohydrates are quickly broken down in the digestive tract, leading to rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. This can lead to carb cravings a few hours later when blood sugar levels go down again. This phenomenon is also called the “blood sugar roller coaster” – which many people who have been on a high-carb diet can relate to. Not surprisingly, eating a lot of refined carbohydrates is associated with negative health effects and many chronic diseases (13, 14, 15). Do NOT be fooled by labels like “whole grains” that are often plastered on processed food packages, including breakfast cereals. These are usually whole grains that have been pulverized into very fine flour and are just as harmful as their refined counterparts. If you’re going to eat carbs, get them from whole, single ingredient foods, not processed junk foods. Bottom Line: The carbohydrates you find in processed foods are usually refined, “simple” carbohydrates. These can lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels and cause negative health effects. 6. Most Processed Foods Are Low in Nutrients Processed foods are extremely low in essential nutrients compared to whole, unprocessed foods.   In some cases, synthetic vitamins and minerals are added to the foods to compensate for what was lost during processing. However, synthetic nutrients are NOT a good replacement for the nutrients found in whole foods. Also, let’s not forget that real foods contain much more than just the standard vitamins and minerals that we’re all familiar with. Real foods… like plants and animals, contain thousands of other trace nutrients that science is just beginning to grasp. Maybe one day we will invent a chemical blend that can replace all these nutrients, but until that happens… the only way to get them in your diet is to eat whole, unprocessed foods. The more you eat of processed foods, the less you will get of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and various trace nutrients. Bottom Line: There are many nutrients found in whole foods that are not found in processed foods. The more processed foods you eat, the less you will get of these nutrients. 7. Processed Foods Tend to be Low in Fiber   Fiber, especially soluble, fermentable fiber, has various benefits. One of the main ones is that it functions as a prebiotic, feeding the friendly bacteria in the intestine (16, 17). There is also evidence that fiber can slow down the absorption of carbohydrates and help us feel more satisfied with fewer calories (18, 19). Soluble fiber can also help treat many cases of constipation, which is a very common problem today (20). The fiber that is found naturally in foods is often lost during processing, or intentionally removed. Therefore, most processed foods are very low in fiber. Bottom Line: Soluble, fermentable fiber has various important health benefits, but most processed foods are very low in fiber because it is lost or intentionally removed during processing. 8. It Requires Less Energy and Time to Digest Processed Foods   Food manufacturers want their processed food products to have a long shelf life. They also want each batch of the product to have a similar consistency and they want their foods to be easily consumed. Given the way foods are processed, they are often very easy to chew and swallow. Sometimes, it’s almost as if they melt in your mouth. Most of the fiber has been taken out and the ingredients are refined, isolated nutrients that don’t resemble the whole foods they came from. One consequence of this is that it takes less energy to eat and digest processed foods. We can eat more of them in a shorter amount of time (more calories in) and we also burn less energy (fewer calories out) digesting them than we would if they were unprocessed, whole foods. One study in 17 healthy men and women compared the difference in energy expenditure after consuming a processed vs a whole foods-based meal (21). They ate a sandwich, either with multi-grain bread and cheddar cheese (whole foods) or with white bread and processed cheese (processed foods). It turned out that they burned twice as many calories digesting the unprocessed meal. The Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) is a measure of how much different foods stimulate energy expenditure after eating. It totals about 10% of total energy expenditure (metabolic rate) in the average person. According to this study, people who eat processed food will cut their TEF in half, effectively reducing the amount of calories they burn throughout the day. Bottom Line: We only burn half as many calories digesting and metabolizing processed foods compared to whole foods. 9. Processed Foods Are Often High in Trans Fats or Processed Vegetable Oils   Processed foods are often high in unhealthy fats. They usually contain cheap fats, refined seed- and vegetable oils (like soybean oil) that are often hydrogenated… which turns them into trans fats. Vegetable oils are extremely unhealthy and most people are eating way too much of them already. These fats contain excessive amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids, which can drive oxidation and inflammation in the body. Several studies show that when people eat more of these oils, they have a significantly increased risk of heart disease, which is the most common cause of death in Western countries today. If the fats are hydrogenated, that makes them even worse. Hydrogenated (trans) fats are among the nastiest, unhealthiest substances you can put into your body. The best way to avoid seed oils and trans fats is to avoid processed foods. Eat real fats like butter, coconut oil and olive oil instead. Just Eat Real Food! When we replace real, traditional foods like butter, meat and vegetables with crappy, processed junk foods, we get fat and sick. Real food is the key to good health, processed food is not. Period. https://authoritynutrition.com/9-ways-that-processed-foods-are-killing-people/     Food Allergies caused by TBHQ?   Cheryl Rockwell, an assistant professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University, uncovered during 9 years of research that the common food additive TBHQ (tert-butylhydroquinone) causes abnormal reactions in the immune system that trigger food allergies. She explains that TBHQ negatively affects “T-cells” in the body (which are generally used to fight infections) in a way that promotes allergies to tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat and shellfish. “Because humans are exposed to TBHQ through ingestion of food, the development of food allergies may be of particular concern. Notably, there has been an increase in reports of food allergy that seems to correlate with the increased use of TBHQ and other phenolic antioxidants as food preservatives.” ~ Cheryl Rockwell, PhD, The Journal of Immunology Dr. Rockwell just received a large grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to continue her research on TBHQ and its relation to human food allergies. While I highly doubt one single food additive is the cause of all food allergies, this is a move in the right direction. Ingredients are dumped into our food with zero independent or regulatory oversight – some of which trigger very serious allergic reactions and can have other negative effects on our health. What is TBHQ? One of my first big restaurant investigations was Chick-Fil-A, in which I found that they used the preservative TBHQ not once – but twice – in their chicken sandwiches as it was in both the chicken and the bun. This sandwich was one of my favorite foods to eat when I was younger, so this really hit home! You can’t get much more toxic than TBHQ. This synthetic preservative is a form of butane and has been linked to vision disturbances, liver enlargement, childhood behavioral problems, and stomach cancer in animal studies. It’s also banned for use in food in other countries including Japan, and is on the Center For Science in The Public Interest’s list as one of the worst food additives to be avoided. Even though TBHQ is technically an “antioxidant” which makes it sound healthy – it’s synthetically created in a lab. Other synthetic antioxidants include BHT and BHA, which the Environmental Working Group says should not be in our food.  Journalist Michael Pollan first alerted the masses to this ingredient 10 years ago in his bestselling book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma: “But perhaps the most alarming ingredient in a Chicken McNugget is tertiary butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ, , an antioxidant derived from petroleum that is either sprayed directly on the nugget or the inside of the box it comes in to “help preserve freshness.” According to A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives, TBHQ is a form of butane (i.e. lighter fluid) the FDA allows processors to use sparingly in our food: It can comprise no more than 0.02 percent of the oil in a nugget. Which is probably just as well, considering that ingesting a single gram of TBHQ can cause “nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse.” Ingesting five grams of TBHQ can kill.” ~ Michael Pollan, The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, 2006 McDonald’s has since removed the TBHQ. Despite the dangers, the FDA has allowed TBHQ in our food since 1972 and since then it has become so common that you can barely walk down a single aisle in the supermarket without running into products with it left and right. When the World Health Organization evaluated the intake of TBHQ in the U.S., they found that people who regularly eat high fat foods are consuming 180% of the “acceptable daily intake”.  In other words… WAY too much! Soon after I consulted Chick-Fil-A in 2012 and raised concerns about the TBHQ, they began testing peanut oil without it in multiple markets – and finally ditched it completely in 2015. They also didn’t replace it with some other toxic chemical, they just took it out. You’ve got to ask yourself, is this ingredient really necessary? Beware: Avoiding TBHQ isn’t easy because it’s not always listed on the label. Food companies are allowed to determine whether or not they will put TBHQ on the label, based on a little loophole in our food labeling regulations. If they decide that TBHQ meets the labeling definition of an “incidental additive” then they can just leave it off the ingredient list. Additives are considered incidental if they don’t serve a function in the finished product and are used in insignificant levels (the FDA doesn’t define what “insignificant” means, so that’s anyone’s guess).  In other words, if TBHQ is used to preserve oil that is an ingredient in cookies, but the amount is considered insignificant and is not preserving the final product (the cookies), it doesn’t need to be listed on the cookie label. Since TBHQ is often used to preserve fats and oils it can be exempt from mandatory labeling as an incidental ingredient in products like crackers, tortillas, and chips. The same goes for when TBHQ is used to preserve flavor ingredients – the food company decides if it is preserving the finished product (requiring a label) or not.  As a precaution, many companies do list TBHQ on the label though, so keep your eyes peeled! My team recently scoured the grocery store shelves and found it in dozens of really popular products – many of them targeting children.
