This stuff should work. I mean bleach kills everything and he found a way to almost buffer it or get such a small amount into the bloodstream and let it kill all bad stuff. I’m trying essaic tea now when my order comes in I’m going to do essaic at the end of the day 2-3 hours after my last mms. MMS saved my wife's life. It's just hard to convince anyone about it because people are too indoctrinated by our society to believe something like MMS works, especially with all the propoganda about it on the internet.
MMS works fine with me with out any serious illness. I had a tooth infection, mixed the drops and brushed that tooth and by the next day I was pain free. I have been using it since then just to improve my health. And believe me, I can feel the difference in my body.

My brother and I met Jim in the beginning of his presenting and received great tremendous benefit. I began mixing an ounce of each part in a plastic jar of water for ten minutes, allowing it to ionize and then pouring it in a soaking bath and putting a pound of each mixed down my water well. I have had a sinus condition for years. My sinuses were always blocked up, particularly in the morning. I also got blood in the tissues fairly often when I blew my nose to relieve the blockages. Initially I was taking MMS because I was always hungry and because of that over weight. This was just a just a shot in the dark after reading other peoples success stories. The results of my taking MMS was that my consistent hunger went away and to my surprise the sinus condition also went away. I have had the sinus condition for so long that it seemed normal. In hindsight I believe both were caused by candida.

15 drops 5 times a day is too much for anybody to handle most cases .
I recommend working up to the 15 drops and then try 15 drops, once a night for two
weeks to two months.....go slow but keep at it in a healthy way that you can

◦ Systemic Candida - MMS really worked for me
For years I have had a problem with feeling sick after vigorous exercise. It has gotten progressively worse over time. I suspected systemic candida, but was never diagnosed. I tried Protocol 1000 and added DMSO. Three weeks later I was ready to test the effectiveness of this treatment. ◦ Morgellans and MMS
i tell you it was a miracle how I got MMS in my hands, I was suffering with what I believe now to be morgellans. My doctor told me, I know what is it, I cant't diagnose it and I can't treat it and walked out of the room. I also had been fighting Candida for years with nothing working it would get better and come back. My daughter had asked me to find a product that had helped her with a heath issue, I found a product I thought was what she wanted. Soon I received an email said my MMS was being shipped. I said "what is MMM"? I researched MMS I could not believe what I was seeing it was exactly what I needed for the symptoms I was having. ◦ Candida Cure!
I just had to write to tell you how MMS has helped cure my Candida. First of all, I had Candida so badly that not only was I exhausted for years on end, but the fungus had migrated to my eyes and ears. It was like looking out through sheets of waxed paper. My ears buzzed and rang non-stop. I itched all over, especially at night when it was so bad it would wake me from a deep sleep. I had many other symptoms and tried many cures, none of which worked until I tried MMS. I had to change my diet to a very low carb diet because sugar feeds yeast. I don’t think you can get better if you continue eating the standard American diet, so I modified my diet to include almost no grains, no sugars of any kind, and very limited fruit. You must do this in order to recover. I had found a product called Syclovir that did a great job at holding the symptoms at bay, but there was no cure even after a year on the product. Then I read that MMS could help kill Candida so I took 7 drops 4 times per day and began to see improvement. I think it’s been about 2 months of this approach and my energy is sky high. I can tolerate more carbs now with no symptoms. I feel great and I know it’s because of the MMS. In addition, MMS has reversed the arthritis I had in my toes and it must have cleaned out my veins because I can now exert myself and not become out of breath. What a miracle MMS has proved to be in my life!
I Sprayed my face with it (as prescribed in 2010, b4 the new book)it stung after a few days (I thought that meant it's working). It cleaned pretty nicely as a brown dot on the End of my nose almost disappeared.

◦ Nail Fungus
I found that my toe nail had a fungus. By the time I noticed it, it was pretty bad. The whole middle of my nail was lifted and not attached. I took a few doses of MMS and than started putting the MMS under my nail and on top of my nail. I used only 3 drops because I only needed a little bit. Two times I used it straight with no water added. The other times I mixed with a small amount of water. I would do it mostly after my shower and before bed. I didn't always remember to apply the MMS so it was sporadic but often enough. Within about a month the fungus was gone. I've heard that after treating a fungus like that a lot of times your nail becomes misshapen. This did not happen after using the MMS. It worked fabulously !! ◦ My fungus nightmare is over and my prety toenail dreams are coming true
First of all let me just say i have been using mms for almost 2 years now and its the most amzing thing ive ever came across ..i am not one to go to the dr ..but luckily have had some medical schooling especially in microbiolgy..also i am quite knowledgeable on the human body and i read info on everything..mms seems to be almost a cure all... i have a list of things that it has conquered without antibiotics or other drs treatments.. btw...im not saying dont see a dr ..im just saying you dont have to take all the meds they give you there is always a safe holistic treatment out there or something like mms.
it has helped my kids and I and also our pets
urinary tract infections (7 drop dose 3 times a day) i dont get them any more because i have done the detox and my body has just rid itself of bacterias!
kidney infections (i took 5 drops orally every 3 hours almost instantly got a huge fever and treated it in 2 days with no antibioitcs!)
toenail fungus deeply woven into the skin (soaking daily in a a strong solution mixed in warm water i reccommend long soak times and when done take a dry rag and use it as a scufer to help remove dead skin this it helps within days you begin to see a more pink tone to your skin versus he yellow color thiswill take sometimes up to a year if you have a really bad problem but so worth it)
warts ( put a bandaid soaked in a somewhat strong mms solution right on the wart allowing the skin to soften and allow the mms in also 15 day detox got rid of alot of things
cold sores (take it right when you feel the tingling i took a 7 drop dose 3 times a day)
a dog bite infection a human (drinking 7 drops 3 times a day) also spraying surface wound with mild mms solution allowing to air dry
tooth abcess (drinking 7 drops 3 times a day)
my teeth tightened up in my mouth ( i used about a 5 drop solution and brushed ny teeth and all over my mouth really good for 2 weeks you should have seen he plaque that fell of my teeth when i flossed!)
my bad night breath went away (using the brushing method above helped but mostly the detox plan because it rid the germs in my stomach which also causes bad breath)
my sinus infection went away and my snoring stopped when i started using it in a mild nasal spray ( i buy a regular saline only nasal spray and i add a somewhat light mms solution to it and use it for my sinuses all the time)
my friend had a mysterious ankle swelling and couldnt walk any more and the drs couldnt explain it ..so i told her to just try the detox while she was waiting for the drs to figure it out...she went to her appt a week later it was gone they were amazed it had been ongoing for months!
any slight feeling of a flu or cold coming on ..take it right away (for me 7 drops 3 times a day worked for me) the bugs will just die out!
also helped with worms in dogs and parvo! (we kept a steady dose flowing thru the dog and it was amazing recovery time almost instant!
we had a fish that had bloat and took him out and let him swim in light mms solution with water for about 15 minutes ...we also poured a lil mms in his tank to kill germs in there and let it run thru the filter to make sure he wouldnt get sick again he recovered within the hour)

◦ Athlete Feet
I had a mild case of athlete feet. On my right foot, I applied one activated drop of MMS between the toes, the fungus disappeared. On my left foot I applied one drop of the unactivated 28% sodium chlorite solution and the fungus also disappeared. After over 6 months it came back, I reapplied the single drop of sodium chlorite and it is gone until today. The activated drop did burn a little, while the sodium chlorite drop alone did not burn at all.
◦ Nail infection
I have had a fungal nail infection on both hands and feet for the last 10 years. I tried all kinds of fungicidal nail varnishes and even risked taking pharmaceutical product which had the possible side affect of liver damage. Nothing worked. I recently tried soaking my feet and hands in a 20 drop MMS solution into a plastic bucket of hot water for 10 minutes. Been doing that for several weeks every day and my nails are looking lovely and normal even though it is mid summer when the infection is usually at it's worst. I am delighted! MMS is amazing!

◦ Athletes Foot Infection
I had suffered from foot fungus for 5 months.. It would come and go.. I tried several of the over the counter anti fungal treatments.. some helped but none made the infection go away.
I have a yearly camping trip which i regularly take the mms with me.. and while there had an Ah Ha! moment.. and mixed up the mms in a plastic zip lock bag.. to soak my toes in. the out break was healed in 4 days. It did take a few weeks for the skin to return to normal but the blisters and pain was gone in 4 days.. and I have not had a recurrence. Yea!

I had some pains between the toes. One evening I decided to treat using MMS. So I warmed some water. I activated 15 drops of MMS with 15 drops of Citric Acid in a basin. I then added the warm water and then put my feet in the water bath for 15 minutes. I let the feet then dry and went to sleep. The following day I never had the pain. It is about over 2 months now and the infection is no more. I also use MMS to treat drinking water and sometimes I take it orally about 5 drops. A fungal infection typically on the skin or mucous membranes caused by candida.

A yeast infection results from an overgrowth of yeast (a type of fungus) anywhere in the body. Candidiasis is by far the most common type of yeast infection. There are more than 20 species of Candida, the most common being Candida albicans. These fungi live on all surfaces of our bodies.
Is Athlete's Foot a form of yeast infection?
Besides ringworm, the same fungus is also responsible for athlete's foot, jock itch, diaper rash and vaginal infections. This rash can cause itching, burning, small blisters, inflammation and cracked, scaly skin especially between fingers and toes and within skin folds.
The infection is normally caused by the candida strain of fungi, which is considered to be harmless in small amounts. However, if the yeast is provided with the correct conditions, it can multiply rapidly, degenerating skin cells and stimulating an episode of athlete's foot.

Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by yeasts that belong to the genus Candida. There are over 20 species of Candida yeasts that can cause infection in humans, the most common of which is Candida albicans. Candida yeasts normally reside in the intestinal tract and can be found on mucous membranes and skin without causing infection; however, overgrowth of these organisms can cause symptoms to develop. Symptoms of candidiasis vary depending on the area of the body that is infected.
Candidiasis that develops in the mouth or throat is called “thrush” or oropharyngeal candidiasis. Candidiasis in the vagina is commonly referred to as a “yeast infection.” Invasive candidiasis occurs when Candida species enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body. What Is Candida?
Candida can be very serious. Recently, a “superbug” candida species known as Candida auris has emerged as a dangerous health threat in several countries and many health care facilities in the U.S. This version of candida — which often spreads through candida biofilms on surfaces such as catheters and bedrails — has proven resistant to multiple drugs, resulting in serious illness.
Candida albicans is the most common type of yeast infection found in the mouth, intestinal tract and vagina, and it may affect skin and other mucous membranes. If the immune system is functioning optimally, this type of yeast infection is rarely serious. However, if the immune system is not functioning properly, the candida infection can migrate to other areas of the body, including the blood and membranes around the heart or brain, causing serious candida symptoms.
Candida is a fungus that aids with nutrient absorption and digestion when in proper levels in the body. When it overproduces, typical candida symptoms may appear. In the digestive tract, if left unchecked, it breaks down the walls of the intestinal lining and penetrates into the bloodstream. This releases byproduct toxins and other toxins from your system, causing leaky gut syndrome.
When your body’s natural pH balance is upset, the candida yeasts can grow out of control, creating a systemic problem and unpleasant candida symptoms. Good healthy bacteria and a properly functioning immune system are essential when fighting this stubborn infection.
Candida overgrowth syndrome, or COS, is the term used when candida has grown out of control in your body. Make no mistake: This is a chronic health condition. In addition to candida symptoms, individuals who have never experienced a serious yeast infection can find they have developed new sensitivities, allergies or intolerances to a variety of foods. These foods include dairy, eggs, corn and gluten.
What Causes Candida Infections?
There are many possible causes of candida, including a diet high in sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol that help feed candida. To add to that, I’ve described six other potential causes below.
1. Broad-Spectrum Antibiotics
Sometimes, antibiotics are needed to fight a stubborn infection to kill the offending bacteria in your system. The problem with antibiotics and with overusing them (often creating antibiotic resistance) is that they don’t just kill the bad bacteria; they kill the good ones, too.
The good bacteria in your system are responsible for digestion and keeping candida under control. After a long course (or multiple courses over a short period), antibiotics can make your body a literal breeding ground for candida.
2. Birth Control Pills
Unlike antibiotics, birth control pills in and of themselves do not directly cause a yeast infection or candida overgrowth syndrome. However, when a woman consumes a diet high in refined sugars and has had a course of antibiotics, birth control pills can adversely affect her body, leading to a candida infection.
Some women find that birth control pills seem to instigate yeast infections — and even long after the initial infection is gone, once they start taking the birth control pills again, candida can take root.
3. Oral Corticosteroids
Individuals who treat their asthma with corticosteroid inhalants are at an increased risk of developing candida in the mouth, leading to systemic candida overgrowth. It is imperative that individuals using corticosteroid inhalers for asthma follow the directions for swishing the mouth out after each use. If oral candidiasis is detected, it can be treated with the gargling of coconut oil and a drop or two of essential clove oil.
4. Cancer Treatments
According to the Department of Clinical Research at Merck Research Laboratories, candidiasis can become invasive in cancer patients and present a serious complication. In this study, one-third of patients being treated for cancer had “invasive” candidiasis. Chemotherapy and radiation can both work to kill cancerous cells and tumors; however, they also kill off the healthy bacteria that naturally fight candida.
In a Type 1 or a Type 2 diabetic, sugar levels in the mouth and other mucous membranes are traditionally higher than in an individual without diabetes. Since candida is a type of yeast and sugar feeds yeast, it is understandable that those with diabetes are at a greater risk for developing candida overgrowth syndrome.
6. Weakened Immune System
Any individual with a weakened immune system is more likely to develop candida. This population includes infants, small children, the elderly, those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS , and other inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.
9 Candida Symptoms
Candida yeast overgrowth can be difficult for a physician to diagnosis. This type of systemic yeast infection presents different ways in different people. Below are nine of the candida symptoms to watch for if you are concerned you have candida, or candida overgrowth syndrome.
1. Chronic Fatigue
If you have fatigue or exhaustion that you simply cannot shake, regardless of the number of hours you sleep, you may have chronic fatigue syndrome. The disease is characterized by fatigue that lasts a minimum of six months and is often accompanied by other candida symptoms, including headaches, joint pain, difficulties with memory and concentration, and sore throat.
Often one of the candida symptoms is chronic fatigue. While a candida infection is not the only cause of chronic fatigue syndrome, many physicians believe it heightens the risk of CFS.
2. Mood Disorders
One of the reasons it can be difficult to diagnose Candida is that so many of the Candida symptoms are common to other conditions, including mood disorders. Individuals with Candida overgrowth may experience dramatic mood swings, anxiety, irritability, depression and even panic attacks.
3. Recurring Vaginal and Urinary Tract Infections
When an individual experiences recurring infections in the urinary tract or vagina, candida may be at the root of the problem. It is important to realize that candida can be sexually transmitted, and partners can spread it back and forth. For women, reduce the risk by avoiding tight-fitting underwear or pantyhose and avoid hot baths during an active infection.
4. Oral Thrush
Oral thrush is actually a yeast infection caused by the same strain of candida that affects other mucous membranes, including the vagina. It’s most often caused by the use of prednisone or other oral corticosteroids as mentioned above. Left untreated, it may spread through the body, including the digestive tract, lungs, liver and heart valves.
Oral Candida is communicable. Newborns can get thrush during birth; children can get it from sharing toys with other children; and adults can pass it back and forth through the saliva.
5. Sinus Infections
As with many of these other Candida symptoms, sinus infections are common today, and it can be difficult to pinpoint the root of the cause. Candida does affect the sinuses and can result in a persistent cough, post-nasal drip, an increase in congestion, seasonal allergies, and general flu-like symptoms. If you experience consistent problems with your sinuses, it’s time to check for a candida infection!
6. Intestinal Distress
Ongoing intestinal distress is one of the more uncomfortable candida symptoms. Persistent flatulence, burping, bloating, constipation or diarrhea, and stomach cramps may be caused by a lack of healthy bacteria in your digestive tract.
When yeast overtakes the intestines, healthy bacteria are undermanned, and cannot fight off the infection alone. When the bacteria in your gut are out of balance, it’s known as dysbiosis. Many individuals experience dramatic relief of chronic intestinal distress when effectively treating a Candida infection.
7. Brain Fog
Along with mood changes and chronic fatigue, brain fog is often overlooked as one of the Candida symptoms. However, Candida overgrowth can cause a lack of focus, poor physical coordination, difficulty in concentrating on tasks and poor memory.
8. Skin and Nail Fungal Infections
Athlete’s foot and fungus in the toenail are common yeast infections, which stem from the same strain of Candida. Continued infections may be a sign that you have a systemic Candida infection.
9. Hormonal Imbalance
A hormonal imbalance is one of the Candida symptoms that presents in many other health conditions. However, it is important to recognize how an infection can cause early menopause, PMS, a low sex drive, migraines, endometriosis, water retention, mood swings and an inability to lose unwanted pounds.
While in the midst of Candida overgrowth, your body becomes inflamed, causing the yeast to grow and spread beyond the digestive tract. One of the byproducts of Candida actually can mimic estrogen, leading to a serious hormonal imbalance.
Treatment 1: The Candida Cleanse
The Candida cleanse helps to rid the body of excess candida through the flushing of the digestive tract, and the introduction of healthy candida fighters found in fermented vegetables and kefir.
You really have two options for a cleanse: a liquids-only cleanse or a more gentle cleanse with food. You may also opt the most thorough gut reboot: starting with the step one cleanse and then move to the step two cleanse. The whole process will set the stage for starting the candida diet as well!
Option One: Liquids-Only Candida Cleanse (Duration 1–2 Days)
Start by making a vegetable broth from organic onions, garlic, celery, kale, sea salt and pure water. Let simmer and strain. Discard the vegetables and refrigerate the broth.
Throughout the day, sip on the warm broth; it’s imperative that you drink lots of water to help your body expel all the toxins in your system. While this is not a long-term cleanse, it can be repeated as needed every few weeks. It can also be used as a jumpstart to the food cleanse below.
Option Two: Steamed Vegetables (Duration 3–5 Days)
By eliminating grains, sugars, fruits, starches and alcohol from your diet for three to five days, you can make great headway in your fight against candida overgrowth.
Mostly, eat fresh, organic vegetables that have been steamed. For this cleanse stage, keep away from any starchy vegetables like carrots, radishes, beets, sweet potatoes and white potatoes, which may contribute to sugar levels and feed the candida. Continue to drink plenty of pure water, a minimum of 72 ounces per day, to help flush the candida and byproducts from your system.
During this time — no more than once a day — you can eat salads made from leafy greens (like romaine) or bitter greens (like chard) and topped with just a bit of coconut oil and apple cider vinegar (or lemon juice).
During either of the candida cleanses above, you can use bentonite clay to help surround the toxins and efficiently remove them from your system.
Treatment 2: The Candida Diet
This is a diet to not just discourage candida; it’s the diet to help you rid your body of candida! This is also a great next step if you have already started with the candida cleanse.
- 1. The first step of the diet is to boost your immune system through the elimination of sugar, alcohol and refined carbohydrates. These items are contributing to the growth of the candida in your system.
- 2. Step two is to replace these foods with organic vegetables, including carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale and asparagus.
According to ancient Chinese medicine, warm starchy vegetables support the spleen in clearing candida from the body. While I don’t recommend these vegetables during the “cleanse” stage, the regular candida diet includes warming fall vegetables that nourish the spleen, such as sweet potatoes, yams, peas, mung beans, lentils, kidney beans, adzuki beans, carrots, beets, corn, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, acorn squash, zucchini, yellow squash, rutabaga and pumpkin. These should be the main sources of carbs that satisfy your cravings for sweets as well.
What about grains? Some grains like quinoa, barley, teff, sorghum and amaranth and a starch like corn can help to dry the overly damp gut, so one serving a day (no more!) of those grains can work for most people with candida.
The same story follows for cold foods, which shouldn’t be consumed more than once per day. Therefore, don’t have a gut-friendly smoothie on the same day you have a salad. Your candida gut will heal most from warm nourishing foods.
As with any food, however, it’s always important to monitor how you feel after consuming a meal when you have candida. Some people who suffer stomach distress after eating any kind of starch, for instance, should avoid starchy vegetables like corn, peas, parsnips, potatoes, pumpkin, squash, zucchini and yams. Instead, they should eat non-starchy vegetables — typically the flowering parts of the plant — like lettuce, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, spinach, mushrooms, onions, peppers and tomatoes.
Also, keep fruit intake low as well as natural sweeteners like maple syrup or honey.
- 3. Add cultured dairy, preferably goat milk kefir, because healthy probiotic foods can effectively kill the candida in your system. Probiotics like kimchi and sauerkraut are good additions to your diet, as well as unsweetened cranberry juice, because they create an acidic environment that makes it difficult for candida to thrive.
Fermented vegetables contain microflora that help to protect the intestines. Regular consumption of fermented foods can help improve the immune system, making the body less hospitable for candida. Begin with a half cup per day of sauerkraut, kimchi or other fermented vegetables as part of a new eating plan dedicated to bringing your body back into a healthy balance.
The candida diet helps to provide beneficial bacteria, regulate appetite, and reduce your cravings for refined carbohydrates and sugars.
Treatment 3: Supplements, Essential Oils & Coconut Oil
Research shows that C. albicans, the strain of candida that leads to systemic candida overgrowth is often resistant to both fluconazole and itraconazole, the antifungal drugs most often prescribed for candida.
- 1. Coconut oil can effectively fight candida due to its antimicrobial properties. ( The combination of lauric acid and caprylic acid found in coconut oil, kills off harmful candida through both ingestion and topical application.
- 2. Milk thistlesupplements help to cleanse your liver from prescription medications (steroids, birth control, antibiotics, as well as others), environmental pollution, heavy metals, and the remnants from both chemotherapy and radiation.
As mentioned above, some prescription medications and cancer treatments can lead to candida overgrowth. Milk thistle, along with the candida diet, can help your body recover and create an environment where candida ceases to thrive.
- 3. Vitamin C helps to boost adrenal glands and helps to restore your immune system. I recommend 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C two or three times per day, taking a total of 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams daily.
- 4. Clove oil, oregano oil and myrrh oil help to kill a variety of parasites and fungi, including candida, in the body. Lavender oil also inhibits the growth of candida and is effective at preventing the spread of the infection. (10)
For example, by adding a couple of drops of clove oil or lavender oil mixed with coconut oil during your cleanse, you can help to kill off the offending candida. Because these essential oils are powerful, they should only be taken internally for 10 days or less.
Also, for oral thrush, use three drops of clove oil with one tablespoon of coconut oil and swish in the mouth for 20 minutes.
Do not give clove oil internally to children under 2 years of age. If you are pregnant or nursing, check with your natural health care provider before taking clove oil internally.
Candida Die-Off Symptoms You May Experience
Rapidly killing off candida in your body creates a metabolic reaction that releases over 70 different toxins into your body. Symptoms that show the candida cleanse and the candida diet are working include:
- Impaired brain function
- Intestinal distress including bloating, gas, constipation and nausea
- Sweating and fever
- Sinus infection
- Skin breakouts (not limited to face)
- Typical flu-like symptoms
When you start experiencing the candida die-off symptoms, rejoice! These symptoms usually clear up in seven to 10 days. The candida is leaving your body, and within just a few weeks, you will notice an increase in energy and focus, as well as relief from other symptoms you have experienced.
After your symptoms have subsided and you have completed the cleanse and the diet, you should continue eating a diet that is high in protein and high-fiber vegetables, and limit grains, fruits, sugar and high-starch vegetables like white potatoes. Continue to consume fermented vegetables and kefir to help your body stay in balance and keep the candida at bay.

If you're not optimally healthy, could candida be at fault? In this interview, British osteopath and naturopath, Dr. Leon Chaitow, author of "Candida Albicans: Natural Remedies for Yeast Infection," discusses its dangers — and more importantly, how to address this exceedingly common infection.
Trained in Great Britain, Chaitow had a medical practice in the U.K. for about 30 years before moving to Greece, where he currently resides.
"In the mid-1980s, I began to notice an increase in the number of patients who were coming to me with … digestive gut problems … yeast-related illnesses … skin problems … vaginitis [and] fatigue …
I was really concerned about what was producing this change in my patient population," Chaitow says. "It was [at] that time that I came across Dr. Crook's book, 'The Yeast Connection' [and] began to understand what I was dealing with."
As his investigation continued, which ultimately culminated in the publication of his book in 1985, he began to see links between chronic fatigue, chronic pain problems and fibromyalgia-type symptoms.
Crook's book was instrumental in my natural health journey as well. I read his book in 1985 — the same year I finished my family practice residency and set up my own medical practice.
Sadly, I was brainwashed into the pharmacological model hook, line and sinker, but I read his book, as like most physicians, I had patients exhibiting these symptoms.
I tried Crook's approach. But because I was so brainwashed, I thought the primary focus was to kill the yeast, so I prescribed antifungals and never addressed the diet. Guess what? No surprise; it never worked.
Fast-forward six or seven years. I now had yet another patient, a young child, presenting with chronic diarrhea, signs of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), along with the classic signs for candida presented in Crook's book.
This time I had grown wiser and decided to include the dietary interventions he prescribed, and lo and behold, it worked like a charm. This really opened my eyes and got me started down the path of nutritional medicine.
What Is Candida, and How Does It Become a Problem?
Candida albicans is a very pervasive yeast. Most everyone watching this has it in their system, and for most, it poses no problem at all. However, if your immune system becomes disrupted from exposure to antibiotics, poor diet or lack of sleep, for example, candida can begin to grow out of control.
"The issue seems to be a mixture between modern lifestyle and diet," Chaitow says. "It can be a range of features that [suggests] some degree of immune suppression; not in the extreme sense, but simply not functioning well enough … The issues seem to initially start in the gut …
It seems the change in the gut flora — which can be the result of antibiotics; it can also simply be nutritional (high-sugar diet, high refined carbohydrates) factor — leads to this change in gut behavior where the yeast can change. The normal flora of the gut produce biotin. That's in a normal healthy flora.
The biotin suppresses the ability of yeast to change into a more aggressive mycelial form, where it can actually put down little rootlets [and] penetrate the gut mucus membrane, starting a process where we start to absorb toxins from the gut, and we start getting sensitivity allergic-type symptoms bodywide.
It can be pain. It can be fatigue. It can be many other things. The change in the normal flora seems to be the key to correcting the problem, because they normally keep yeast under control. Yeast is there, but it's not aggressive. Once we lose the functionality of the normal gut flora, the problems accelerate."
Signs and Symptoms of Candida
One major (and clearly visible) clinical symptom of candida is a white coating on your tongue. When your microbial balance is normal, your tongue is typically clean and pink. Other common symptoms suggesting candida has gotten the upper hand include:
Sudden development of food sensitivities
Unusual aches and pains that do not appear to have a determinable cause (such as an injury)
Gut problems, such as bloating, constipation or diarrhea
Unnatural, persistent fatigue
Odd skin issues, such as dry patches
Vaginitis (inflammation of the genital area in women)
Interestingly, Chaitow also discovered that candida symptoms have many commonalities with symptoms related to improper breathing. He spent over a decade studying the biochemical effects of breathing dysfunction, which is also extremely common, and many of them are identical to yeast problems.
"I began to see how young women with yeast-related problems [also] had upper chest breathing patterns. It's extremely common in women to have that," he says.
"These breathing pattern disorders were leading to a range of symptoms, [including] gut symptoms (because smooth muscle constriction occurs when you're in a state of respiratory alkalosis or overbreathing) [and fatigue].
They were getting all the symptoms that I thought were yeast related. Many of the yeast-type problems are compounded [or] aggravated by common breathing pattern disorders. Not pathology, simply dysfunction …
They're not related [but] very similar symptoms can emerge from both directions. Sometimes they're both happening and you're only dealing with one. The ideal is to deal with lifestyle, which would include enhanced breathing patterns and the dietary side.
The problem is if you only focus on the diet and the obvious yeast overgrowth, and you don't deal with what might be treading into it from what is an extremely common problem, you miss a part of the story."
One of the best ways to address any breathing dysfunction you may have is to familiarize yourself with the Buteyko Breathing Technique.
Breathing is typically ignored when it comes to health, yet breathing properly can improve oxygenation through your body, including your brain, and is a powerful strategy for relieving stress and anxiety — mental factors that can have an adverse effect on your physical health if left unaddressed.
How to Control Candida
In order to control the candida yeast — which is typically part of your normal flora; not necessarily a pathogen but rather an opportunistic "parasitic" infection — you want to starve it, thereby suppressing it naturally rather than killing it outright.
Candida can be viewed as a free-loader that takes advantage of your mistakes when you fail to implement a proper lifestyle or are exposed and buy into the medical paradigm that uses drugs as the go-to solution. Very frequently, these drugs —antibiotics, steroid hormones and oral contraceptives, for example — will change your internal environment, predisposing candida to grow into an invasive form of infection that can cause serious problems.
"The formula I try to have as an overarching approach to all these chronic problems is to try and simplify it to enhance immune function, whichever way you can; reduce the adoptive load that you're imposing to the system. It can be just better lifestyle, better sleep, more exercise and improved, enhanced diet.
Stop feeding the yeast, stop damaging your immune function, and replenish the gut flora as best possible," Chaitow says. "The yeast, controlled, takes care of itself. You don't have to kill it … We have this natural wonderful symbiosis with our gut flora. It keeps us alive. It keeps us healthy. But if we damage it, we pay the price."
Avoiding Antibiotics and Optimizing Your Diet Are Key Treatment Strategies
Avoiding antibiotics is one important prevention strategy. Only take them if your life depends on it. Also avoid antibiotics in your food. This means avoiding foods from animals raised in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), as most are routinely fed low-dose antibiotics to counteract poor sanitation and crowded living conditions, and to boost growth.
As much as 80 percent of the antibiotics used in the United States are used in agriculture, so it's a significant source of exposure. Also avoid unnecessary hormones, such as contraceptives, and sugar. Ideally, your diet should be low in net carbs, high in high-quality fats and moderate in protein. As noted by Chaitow:
"The diet is the key. The diet needs to be as unprocessed as possible … The Mediterranean Diet is the ideal one. It's fish (not farmed fish if possible) [and] lean meat … The agricultural industry is the main user of antibiotics [so] that's where we're most at risk … Vegetables, fruits — not too much of the very sweet fruits at the beginning of the anti-Candida program, but certainly fruits like papaya are wonderful.
The avoidance of anything that is going to provoke fermentation. Sugar is key to avoid. At the beginning, that even covers things like honey in the first month or two of an anti-Candida program. I think it's quite a simple process. It's healthy lifestyle, healthy diet. The program has to be coupled initially by trying to encourage more normal gut flora. We go straight into the prebiotics and probiotics. That needs to be accompanied by change in diet and avoiding antibiotics wherever possible."
When Might You Need Drug Therapy?
In his book, Crook recommends Nystatin, an antifungal drug that is available as a powder or tablets. It's a relatively benign drug with few side effects. Still, while it may be necessary in extreme cases, Chaitow avoids antifungals unless the condition is not improving at a reasonable rate. Diflucan is a type of antibiotic that may also be prescribed if all else fails.
"Use [drugs] only as a fallback position," Chaitow recommends. "Over the years, that has proved adequate if people have the patience. There are issues about cost here, because sometimes, a comprehensive antifungal program becomes somewhat expensive. You've got a number of nutrients, probiotics and so on to buy. Some of the food is more expensive if you're buying organic meat rather than the normal processed meat and so on. I think people have to compromise at times.
I think using antifungals, unless there's an extreme fungal infection that demands a rapid resolution, and as an economic imperative, I would try to think of it as, not last resort, but certainly second resort. Primary is diet, lifestyle and the associated probiotics. There are many botanical, herbal-type products, which can assist in that process. I'm not sold on always or even 50 percent of the time using medication."
Fermented Foods Are a Great Source of Probiotics
High-quality probiotic supplements can indeed be pricey, but you can easily slash your bill by using homemade fermented vegetables instead. I personally don't take any probiotics. I use high-quality fermented vegetables, which contain FAR more viable beneficial organisms than commercial probiotics do. Chaitow also recommends using prebiotic fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), which help enhance the functionality of normal gut flora and can be taken as a powder.
"I absolutely agree that fermented foods are the ideal," he says. "[But] it's sometimes a shift too far for people in the early stages. That's completely outside of their culture. It's something that I try to introduce when I can … The more complicated it is, the more expensive it is, the more difficult it is, the less likely you're going to have compliance.
If you lose your patient because they just find that it's too much, either too expensive, too complicated or too unpleasant, you've not gained anything. It's about simplicity for me. I use the prebiotics [and] probiotics that come in a simple, easy form to take."
A drawback of FOS is that it could potentially lead to bacterial overgrowth in your small intestine. It's extremely rare, but it has been known to occur. A more natural approach to get more prebiotics is simply to eat more high-fiber foods. There are nutritional trackers — chronometer.com/mercola is my favorite — that will tell you how many grams of fiber you're getting. Try to get above 40-70 grams of fiber a day.
You may not be able to do that unless you use a fiber supplement like chia seeds, which is a whole food, or organic psyllium husk. (Make sure it's organic, as psyllium is frequently grown and contaminated with large amounts of pesticides.) I take about 3 tablespoons of each per day, which is how I can get my daily fiber intake up to 80 grams. The fiber acts as a magnificent substrate to nourish healthy bacteria, which can actually double every 20 minutes or so when they get the nutrients they need.
I'm currently finishing up my next book, which details how to optimize your mitochondrial health through the use of mitochondrial metabolic therapy. Interestingly, the list of supplements Chaitow recommends against candida is almost identical to the ones known to improve mitochondrial health, which is a clear win-win! These include:
- • Caprylic acid, a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) with eight carbons (which is why it's also known as C8). While it's found in coconut oil, you can also buy MCT oil, either straight C8 or in combination with capric acid (C10). No other food source converts to ketones more readily than C8, and ketones are a magnificent, efficient fuel for your body. Caprylic acid is also a potent antifungal, and Chaitow recommends it in lieu of antifungal drugs.
- • Berberine, the main active ingredient in goldenseal, has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and immune-enhancing properties. It is also very effective in assisting mitochondrial functions.
- • Echinacea, which helps support a healthy immune system, also has antibacterial and antibiotic properties.
- • Pau d'Arco is another potent antifungal agent shown to inhibit candida albicans. Interestingly, the primary ingredient in this tree bark is beta-lapachone, which is also a very potent catalyst for a molecule called NAD+. This molecule is a receptor for electrons in the electron transport chain in the mitochondria. It also acts as a signaling molecule. It's a sensor for stress and disease.
NAD+ declines with age, and anti-aging researchers have identified this molecule as one of the primary control mechanisms for slowing down the aging process. It may actually be the most critical one. Pau d'Arco has the added advantage of being inexpensive, as far as supplements go.

What is candidiasis of the skin?
Different types of bacteria and fungi live and grow on your skin. Most of them aren’t dangerous. Your body requires the majority of them to carry out normal functions. However, some can cause infections when they begin to multiply uncontrollably.
The Candida fungus is one of these potentially harmful organisms. When an overgrowth of Candida develops on the skin, an infection can occur. This condition is known as candidiasis of the skin, or cutaneous candidiasis.
Candidiasis of the skin often causes a red, itchy rash to form, most commonly in the folds of the skin. This rash may also spread to other areas of the body. While the symptoms are often bothersome, they can usually be treated with improved hygiene and antifungal creams or powders.
What are the symptoms of candidiasis of the skin?
The main symptom of candidiasis of the skin is a rash. The rash often causes redness and intense itching. In some cases, the infection can cause the skin to become cracked and sore. Blisters and pustules may also occur.
The rash can affect various parts the body, but it’s most likely to develop in the folds of the skin. This includes areas in the armpits, in the groin, between the fingers, and under the breasts. Candida can also cause infections in the nails, edges of the nails, and corners of the mouth.

Candidiasis of the skin usually isn’t contagious. However, people with weakened immune systems may develop the condition after touching the skin of an infected person. Those with compromised immune systems are also more likely to develop a severe infection as a result of candidiasis.
How is candidiasis of the skin diagnosed?
Your doctor will likely be able to make a diagnosis simply by performing a physical examination. During the exam, they’ll inspect the location of your rash and the appearance of your skin.
Your doctor may also want to perform a skin culture before making a diagnosis of candidiasis of the skin. During a skin culture, your doctor will rub a cotton swab over the affected area and collect a skin sample. The sample will then be sent to a laboratory to be tested for the presence of Candida.
How is candidiasis of the skin treated?
Candidiasis of the skin can usually be prevented with home remedies, the most important of which is proper hygiene. Washing the skin regularly and drying the skin thoroughly can prevent the skin from becoming too moist. This is vital to keeping Candida infections at bay.
There are many lifestyle changes you can make to both prevent and treat a candidiasis infection.
- Quickly change out of damp clothing, such as swimsuits or sweaty workout clothes.
- Change your socks and undergarments regularly.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing.
- Use gentle and scent-free soap on affected areas.
- Add probiotics to your diet.
- Reduce the amount of sugar in your diet.
Since abnormal blood sugar levels can contribute to the development of Candida infections, keeping your blood sugar under control may also help relieve symptoms. You may be able to lower your blood sugar by reducing the amount of sugar in your diet and by exercising for 30 minutes at least three times per week. If you have diabetes, it’s important to continue following your doctor’s instructions as you may need to start receiving oral medications or an increased amount of insulin.
In severe or persistent cases of candidiasis, your doctor may recommend using an antifungal cream or powder that can be applied to your skin. Over-the-counter antifungal creams that are often recommended include clotrimazole (Mycelex), miconazole (Monistat), and tioconazole (Vagistat). This type of treatment can kill Candida and reduce the spread of the infection.
Your doctor may prescribe an antifungal cream such as nystatin or ketoconazole if the over-the-counter treatments aren’t effective. If the infection has already spread to areas inside your body, such as your throat or mouth, you may need to take an oral antifungal to get rid of it.
Cutaneous candidiasis in babies
Cutaneous candidiasis (or candidiasis present on skin, nails, or hair) is a common occurrence in infants and babies.
Candidiasis-related diaper rash is one of the most frequently occurring candidiasis infections in babies. This rash is typically red with a well-defined border, and normally lasts more than three days. Treatment includes changing the infant’s diaper frequently and allowing them to wear loose-fitting clothes on top of the diaper. The antifungal nystatin may be prescribed.
Oral thrush is another common occurrence in newborns and infants under 6 months old. Symptoms can include cracked skin in the corners of the mouth and whitish patches on the lips, tongue, or inside of the cheeks. Your doctor can prescribe an antifungal medication that’s applied to the infant’s mouth several times a day.
If candidiasis infection is left untreated, it can enter the bloodstream and spread. See your doctor if you believe your baby has candidiasis.
Cutaneous candidiasis in children
Although healthy children have strong immune systems, a 2010 study found that the rate of topical fungal infections among children is increasing rapidly. Children sometimes develop candidiasis infections after receiving antibiotics that treat another condition. Children who suck their thumbs may be prone to developing candidiasis infections in or around their nail beds.
If your child is 9 months or older and has reoccurring thrush or skin infections, this could point to an underlying health concern, such as HIV or another problem with the immune system. Older children with frequent or severe skin infections should also be tested for diabetes.
What is the outlook for someone with candidiasis of the skin?
Candidiasis of the skin usually goes away with treatment, and most people make a full recovery without complications. If treated, the candidiasis typically resolves within one to two weeks. Without prescription treatment, recovery can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the severity of the infection.
Even with treatment, it is possible for the infection to return in the future. People with compromised immune systems, especially people who are undergoing chemotherapy and those with HIV or AIDS, are at a much higher risk of severe or life-threatening Candida infections. If you’re undergoing chemotherapy or you have HIV or AIDs and you develop severe throat pain, headache, or high fevers, you should see your doctor immediately.
What natural remedies are most effective against cutaneous candidiasis?
Some of the more effective natural topical remedies that may be used to treat a mild cutaneous Candida infection include apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, garlic, and tea tree oil. These are inexpensive, easy to use, and have minimal side effects.
However, it’s always a good idea to test them out on a small area first to check for an allergic reaction or sensitivity. Since “good bacteria” help keep Candida in check, probiotics taken orally can be helpful in preventing and treating Candida infections, especially those caused by antibiotic use. Yogurts with “live and active cultures” contain probiotics that can be effective for this.
The Candida cleanse is a special diet that severely restricts sugar, refined flour, grains, dairy products, alcohol, and processed foods. It allows mainly vegetables and herbs. There is no scientific evidence that the Candida cleanse is effective in treating cutaneous Candida infections. Although, other bacteria like E. coli are more likely to cause UTIs.

Being on the pill and taking steroid drugs also tend to increase the chances of suffering a fungal overgrowth. Anything which lowers the natural immune system increases the chance of fungal overgrowth. This can include emotional and mental stress, operations and other illnesses, and drugs which may suppress immunity. A diet high in sugar and white refined carbohydrates can also encourage a fungal overgrowth.
Foods to Avoid
* SUGAR (in all forms, and food containing sugar since candida feeds on sugar) - This includes brown and white sugar, demerera, molasses, syrup, honey, malt and chocolate. The same goes for all other forms of confectionery, icing, marzipan, ice cream, desserts, puddings, cakes, biscuits, soft drinks, squash and all canned drinks, tinned fruit in syrup etc. All packets and tins should be checked for hidden sugar, including frozen and canned vegetables. Other names for sugar include fructose, lactose, maltose, sucrose and dextrose.
* REFINED GRAINS (since these are high in sugar and feed fungus) - This includes white flour, granary flour, white rice, white pasta, cornflour (cornstarch), custard powder, cornflakes and cereals (unless wholemeal or wholegrain).
* ALCOHOL - This includes beer, wine and spirits.
* COW`S MILK (including milk products, cream, and cheese) - This is because milk contains lactose which promotes Candida growth.
* MORE THAN 3 PIECES FRESH FRUIT DAILY (stewed, made into jam or juice) - Fruit is made of fructose.
* DRIED FRUIT - This includes prunes and fruit in muesli as these are very high in sugar.
* YEAST (all foods containing or derived from it) - Usually people with candida are allergic to these foods, and this will place and extra burden on the immune system. This includes bread, food coated in breadcrumbs, Marmite, Vecon, Bovril, Bisto, Oxo, citric acid, monosodium glutamate, vitamin tablets (check the labels state `yeast-free`), pizza bases and most pita bread. Commercial bread which may claim that it is `yeast-free` may have been made with sour dough or sprouted grains and moldy cheeses (Brie, Camembert, Stilton).
* PEANUTS - Avoid peanuts and peanut butter completely because they can be high in mold and can burden the immune system.
* TEA, COFFEE & HOT CHOCOLATE contain stimulants which raise blood sugar and contribute to sugar cravings.
* ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS may feed Candida as effectively as sugar.
* PRESERVATIVES may burden the immune system.
Foods to Enjoy
* WHOLE GRAINS (Malt-free) - If you are not allergic to wheat or gluten, try quinoa, millet, buckwheat, brown rice, oats, spelt, and amaranth.
* MILK ALTERNATIVES (sugar free) include oat milk and rice milk, and microfiltered whey protein (which does not contain lactose).
* COLD PRESSED OILS (such as linseed, olive oil and flaxseed for salad dressing)
* LEGUMES (including lentils and all beans)
* ALL FRESH VEGETABLES are best eaten raw or lightly steamed as well as avocado and cucumber (technically fruits).
* SEEDS AND NUTS like sunflower, pumpkin, flax and sesame make nutritious snacks.

* MILD SPICES add interest like cinnamon, coriander, cumin, and turmeric. Avoid hot ones.
* HOT DRINKS [barley cup (if not gluten intolerant) and any type of herb tea or fruit tea providing it has no citric acid, malt, or artificial flavourings and colourings]
* COLD DRINKS (filtered or bottled water, tomato juice, iced fruit teas)
* 1-3 PIECES OF FRUIT PER DAY (for variety in the diet) But avoid these too if you notice a worsening in Candida symptoms.
* SUGAR-FREE CONDIMENTS (such as sugar free ketchup, vinegar, salt, pepper and tamari)
Notes on other foods
* If you regularly eat foods you have become allergic to, it will place more pressure on your immune system which is already stretched fighting off the Candida, so ideally avoid any foods you know you are intolerant or allergic to.
* You may know that some practitioners recommend also avoiding all nuts that aren`t freshly cracked, mushrooms, all fruit and fermented foods like vinegar. More and more practitioners believe this is unnecessary and makes the diet excessively restrictive. Patients risk becoming nutrient deficient as well as depressed or even paranoid about food when the diet becomes too bland and restricted.
Identifying the stresses in life which may be lowering immunity and working towards reducing them is essential for optimum health. These stresses could be mental, physical, emotional or environmental.
* Sufficient rest is also very important to recover, not only sleep but relaxation and enjoyment of life.
* It is important to sit down to eat and view this as a relaxation time; eat food you enjoy and chew well.
* Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, tai chi, massage and walking in the fresh air are very important.
* More vigorous exercise may be useful to release tension, but excessive exercise can reduce your body`s immunity. So while fighting Candida you are better doing low and moderately low intensity exercise which is enjoyable.
* Massage, shiatsu, cranial sacral, reflexology, and other body work will help the body relax.

In fact, candida overgrowth can be at the bottom of headaches, acne, eczema, PMS, athlete's foot, cancer, allergies, depression, chronic fatigue, vision problems, sinus problems, ear problems, rashes, hormonal imbalances, yeast infections, migraines, mood swings, symptoms of MS, irritable bowel symptom, constipation, poor memory, chronic pain, acid reflux and more.
These can be simply disease names for problems caused by an overabundance of the candida yeast in the body. Candida overgrowth often causes different problems in different people, and it can lodge and nest in different areas of different people's bodies.
Candida overgrowth is often initially caused by antibiotics that wipe out our healthy bacteria, because those healthy bacteria are meant to keep candida in small proportions in the first place. Merck echoes this statement and spells out, "People taking antibiotics may develop candidiasis because the antibiotics kill the bacteria that normally reside on the body, allowing candida to grow unchecked."
High sugar and simple carbohydrate diets feed the overgrowth until it grows to large proportions and eventually shows itself as various problems. Problems with candida overgrowth can occur years, even decades, after antibiotics were taken and the length of time it'll take to see those problems can be largely dependent on dietary habits.
Most people who believe in the drug-oriented approach of mainstream medicine will then find themselves on numerous medications later in life, due to the fact that they've destroyed their first line of immune defense with antibiotic consumption.
In truth, antibiotics are one of the most commonly used drugs in the world - and they make enormous amounts of money for the medical establishment. Because antibiotics destroy the foundation of our immune system they create numerous problems, and for the medical establishment, they create customers - and profits - for life.
If you need an antibiotic or antibacterial substance, there are many natural methods that do the trick. Natural antibacterials generally won't destroy your healthy bacteria, and the ones below certainly don't.
Three tablespoons of coconut oil, twice a day, for several days can be an effective antibacterial. Coconut oil has numerous benefits and being a powerful antibacterial agent is just one of them. In fact, because coconut oil is such a powerhouse at keeping problems at bay, it's wise to consume it on a regular basis for constant antiviral and antibacterial protection.
Raw garlic is another effective antibacterial agent and to control the taste factor, you can slip garlic raw into other food before eating it. Slipping a clove of raw garlic into a chuck of tomato with sea salt can be an effective way to consume garlic raw without the taste being overwhelming.
To get the benefits from raw garlic, crush it and leave it exposed to air for a few minutes to fully activate its disease fighting properties. To fight a problem in your body, you'll want to consume at least five or six raw cloves a day, and consuming raw parsley or mint afterward can help with any breath issues.
Coconut oil and raw garlic also help with candida issues, which most of the population already has in varying stages, due to standard antibiotic use and common diets. But for most, a deep candida cleanse is needed to get to the root of an established candida problem. Garlic and coconut oil can be helpful for candida issues, but often they're not nearly enough.
My conclusion about Candida “overgrowth”.
Below is an INTERESTING article from a dietitian stating that Candida overgrowth doesn’t exist but is the gut flora being destroyed and she brings out some good points.
I personally believe it exists and begins in the stomach and can be easily “put back in balance” by G2Church Sacraments and correct diet. I will explain this Sunday on our 91st G2Voice Broadcast!

We All Have Candida (And it's OK!)
Debunking claims of yeast overgrowth.

One of the more common online health fictions I encounter is that of a mythical condition called "Candida overgrowth." I've been confronted enough about this purported condition by misinformed patients that I've decided it's finally time to set the record straight.
You may not have heard of Candida albicans – a species of yeast – but you almost certainly harbor it in your digestive tract. Exposure to Candida is so universal that doctors sometimes use skin or blood tests that measure response to Candida in order to verify that one's immune system is working properly.
Specifically, a well-functioning immune system would be expected to mount a response to a foreign protein that's so ubiquitous in the environment. Furthermore, Candida is a normal member of the human gut flora – the trillions-strong community of microscopic yeasts and bacteria that reside in our bowels. In other words, it's supposed to be there.
Despite the fact that "having Candida" is universal among healthy humans, there's a lot of talk circulating online about this species of yeast, implicating it in a host of undesirable health conditions, from headaches, joint pain and fatigue to weight gain, food cravings and allergies.
Patients have come to me on a "yeast-free" diet because they've read it will improve their chronic digestive problems or recurrent vaginal yeast infections. Sometimes, patients report that a holistic practitioner has diagnosed them with "overgrowth" of Candida in the gut, which they believe to be responsible for their chronic bloating or irregular bowel movements. When they show up in my office, however, they remain symptomatic despite following the so-called "Candida diet" they were prescribed.
So, is there anything to these accusations against this much-maligned species of yeast? Let's examine some well-established scientific facts:
- • Fact No. 1: Candida infections can and do affect certain parts of the body – but generally not the intestines. Candida infection – called candidiasis – affects the skin and specific mucous membranes including the vagina, mouth and esophagus.

The type of cells lining the intestine, however, preclude the invasion of hyphae, the branching tentacles that enable fungi to penetrate and colonize a tissue. Candidiasis is an opportunistic infection that generally occurs after antibiotic use or when someone is immunocompromised – as in the case of AIDS, cancer or critical illness.
Newborns are also susceptible to Candida infections in their diaper area or mouths (oral thrush) due to their underdeveloped immune systems and may transmit yeast infections to the skin of their mothers' nipples when nursing. (Ouch!)
For the reason described above, Candida does not infect the small intestine nor does it overgrow in the colon. In fact, searching the term "Candida overgrowth" in PubMed, the national database of over 22 million published biomedical research studies maintained by the National Institutes of Health, turns up nothing. Unless every medical researcher who studies Candida, digestive health, infectious disease or immunology is in on a conspiracy to hide the truth, it's pretty safe to say that "Candida overgrowth" is not an actual phenomenon.
If this doesn't convince you, consider this: A Candida infection of a mucous membrane is visible to the naked eye – it looks like plaques of cottage cheese and there's no missing it. If a doctor scopes your GI tract and doesn't see a Candida infection, then you don't have a Candida infection. There's no such thing as an invisible Candida overgrowth; if you had it, a doctor would see it plain as day.
- • Fact No. 2: The Candida you do have in the colon does not cause gas or bloating. Here's a fun fact about basic fungal metabolism: Unlike bacteria, yeasts do not produce hydrogen or methane gas as a byproduct of metabolizing nutrients in the oxygen-poor environment of the colon. Instead, yeasts produce carbon dioxide, a gas that quickly diffuses into the bloodstream and is exhaled by the lungs.
You could harbor a pound of Candida in your colon, and it still wouldn't make you flatulent or bloated – the carbon dioxide doesn't sit around in the colon long enough. In other words, if you've got excessive wind or bloating, blame it on a bacteria, not a yeast!
- • Fact No. 3: If you suffer from chronic yeast infections, eliminating "dietary yeasts" won't help. There are over 1,500 different species of yeasts within Kingdom Fungi. The yeasts used in food fermentation, from bread baking to beer making, are generally from Saccharomyces species, not Candida. So, just as the Lactobacillus bacteria used to culture your yogurt could not cause a Salmonella infection, so too a Saccharomyces-containing food like bread, beer or sauerkraut cannot cause (or worsen) infections caused by Candida.
- • Fact No. 4: You don't have Candida in your blood. Or perhaps it's more accurate to say that if you did have Candida in your blood, you'd probably be in an Intensive Care Unit fighting for your life, not walking around with a "foggy brain" or bloated belly reading this article.
Websites dedicated to the fiction of "Candida overgrowth" allege that Candida can leak through the gut wall and enter into the bloodstream, causing headaches, depression or other systemic symptoms. This claim is patently false. Unless the skin or gut membranes are broken by trauma or punctured by hardware, fungi cannot just slip out into the bloodstream and hitch a ride around one's body.
Blood does NOT harbor yeast in otherwise healthy, ambulatory people. When yeast does manage to find its way into the bloodstream, it results in a life-threatening condition called fungemia. A person couldn't walk around with fungemia for very long without falling critically ill and adopting a sugar- or yeast-free diet certainly is no substitute for ICU care.
So what of those tests your naturopath ran which s/he used to diagnose your alleged Candida overgrowth? They may be antibody tests that confirm nothing other than that you have been exposed to Candida environmentally, and your healthy, well-functioning immune system appropriately developed antibodies against it, as it does for all foreign proteins. Or they may be stool tests that show, under a microscope, you indeed harbor Candida in your colon ... as would be expected.
Of note, there is no established "normal" value of Candida in the gut; therefore, interpreting any test result as indicative of an abnormally high value of Candida lacks scientific validity.
To be sure, I have no particular love or affinity for Candida as a species; as is the case for three-quarters of women, Candida has given me my fair share of grief. So, it's strange to find myself in the position of defending Candida against the online smear campaign that's been perpetuated against it.
Why do I even bother? Because the Candida hoax is a diversion that leads people with real digestive distress further away from discovering the true cause of their symptoms, thereby prolonging the time to a proper diagnosis and effective treatment.
